Tech Giants Intensify AI Race, Microsoft Activates Its Largest Indian Data Hub

Stock News08-06 21:27

The global race to dominate artificial intelligence is heating up, prompting major technology firms to rapidly expand into fast-growing emerging markets. On Thursday, Microsoft (MSFT.US) activated its largest data center in India, located in Hyderabad, with the Adani Group and HDFC Bank serving as early adopters of the facility. This strategic move is designed to help Microsoft capture a significant share of India's rapidly expanding AI market.

The launch of this data center in south-central India expands Microsoft's cloud service regions in the country to four. Combined with its existing operational hubs in Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai, this solidifies Microsoft's position as the largest cloud computing provider in India. The Windows-maker has committed approximately $20.5 billion to grow its Indian operations, targeting the country's massive base of over one billion internet users and its rich pool of tech talent. Microsoft reported that its Azure cloud business has achieved double-digit revenue growth in India for two consecutive years. Additionally, Microsoft is collaborating with Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Jio to co-manage two data centers in the country.

Key Investment and Strategic Importance

Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India, stated, "To create value with AI, you need to deploy trusted infrastructure close to where data is stored, where teams operate, and where business decisions are made." He added that the new facility is a critical component of this strategy. India's vast user base and immense AI market potential are attracting a flood of global tech players, intensifying competition in the sector. Other industry leaders, such as Google's parent company Alphabet and Amazon, are also ramping up their data center investments in India.

Challenges in Infrastructure Expansion

However, the infrastructure build-out by overseas giants in India has not been without hurdles, with several projects sparking industry debate. For instance, in the case of Google's planned data center in India, environmental activists have raised concerns that the approval process was too rapid and failed to adequately assess the potential negative impacts of large-scale data center operations on local water resources and the ecological environment. Indian authorities have denied these allegations.
