Strengthening China's Maritime Transport: Liaoning's Significant Potential

Deep News08:00

National Committee member Li Ying, a professor at Dalian Maritime University, expressed her views on enhancing China's shipping industry during a collective interview session. She emphasized that maritime transport plays a dominant role in international trade, handling 80% of global cargo volume. For economic development and national strength, robust transportation, particularly maritime shipping, is essential.

Li Ying identified three key directions for advancement: larger scale, greater intelligence, and enhanced sustainability. Regarding scale, she shared an example from a recent research visit to Zhoushan's Shulanghu port, where a container ship with a capacity of 20,000 TEUs was described by its captain as capable of carrying annual supplies for a city of five million people. China has achieved comprehensive breakthroughs in high-end shipbuilding, successfully developing aircraft carriers, large LNG carriers, and large cruise ships.

On intelligence, Li Ying highlighted that digital and smart technologies ensure safe and efficient maritime通道 operations. Her team has moved their laboratory to the sea, solving core technical challenges and transforming previous "blind zones" into intelligently monitored, controllable, and responsive maritime areas, significantly improving accident supervision and emergency response capabilities.

In terms of sustainability, Liaoning has made notable progress. The province has achievements in promoting green shipping and vessel construction, such as establishing the first large-scale LNG bunkering station. LNG carriers are recognized globally as high-technology, high-difficulty, and high-value-added products. Last September, a 175,000-cubic-meter LNG carrier independently developed and designed by Dalian Shipbuilding was named and delivered. Dalian Shipbuilding has now formed a capacity advantage for batch orders and construction, consolidating its leading position in offshore oil and gas equipment. By 2025, the added value of Liaoning's shipbuilding industry increased by 84.8%.

Participating in the session made Li Ying deeply aware of the attention given to Liaoning's development. As a witness to the province's progress since studying abroad in the 1990s and returning to work in her hometown, she expressed pride in contributing to high-quality development in Liaoning. Looking ahead, Li Ying aims to master key core technologies, continuously injecting scientific and technological innovation into building China into a strong maritime nation, asserting that Liaoning has great potential to make China's maritime transport stronger.
