Citi Maintains Buy Rating on Maoyan Entertainment With HK$6 Price Target, Citing Favorable National Day Holiday Competitive Position

Citi has issued a research report maintaining a "Buy" rating on Maoyan Entertainment (01896) with a price target of HK$6, based on 14 times forecast 2027 adjusted price-to-earnings ratio, reflecting the recent revaluation of the media sector. Investor expectations for National Day holiday box office revenues remain low, primarily due to weak consumer spending and the absence of a clear blockbuster hit, while the extended Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays may also divert demand toward travel rather than moviegoing. However, amid these subdued expectations, the brokerage views Maoyan's competitive position favorably and considers it a primary beneficiary if box office performance exceeds forecasts.

The report notes that Maoyan has confirmed four film releases spanning diverse genres, including crime, action, animation, and comedy. With rivals scaling back their activities, its positioning as a leading distributor and ticketing platform works to Maoyan's advantage. Among upcoming releases, China Literature Ltd (00772) has "Trace of the Detective," while Damai has no film slated; Enlight Media will release "Vivid Colors," and the brokerage also expects Bona and Maoyan's "Penghu Sea Battle" to hit theaters. Citi forecasts National Day holiday box office revenues of 1.6 billion yuan in 2026, down 12% year-over-year, but flat on a per-day basis.
