AI chip demand powers South Korea toward record $1 trillion annual export milestone

South Korea's export performance has already surpassed last year's full-year total, with AI infrastructure investment emerging as the dominant growth driver.

As of early September, the country's cumulative exports reached $709.4 billion, exceeding the $709.3 billion record set for the entire year of 2025, according to data from the Korea Customs Service. The agency projects that South Korea could break through the $1 trillion threshold by early December, becoming only the fourth nation globally to achieve annual exports at that scale.

Semiconductors serve as the cornerstone of this export surge. From January through August, chip shipments skyrocketed 169.6% year-on-year to $281 billion, accounting for 41% of total exports during the period. The relentless expansion of global AI infrastructure spending has intensified demand for memory chips, tightened supply, and pushed prices upward, directly benefiting industry giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.

In addition, improving demand across major markets has provided further support to South Korea's export momentum. However, a clear divergence exists within the export mix: passenger vehicles, the second-largest export category, saw overseas shipments decline 4% year-on-year, underscoring the economy's heavy reliance on semiconductor sales.

The Korea Customs Service noted that despite uncertainties stemming from supply chain disruptions and Middle East tensions, export growth remains robust. Should the $1 trillion milestone be crossed in early December, it would mark another all-time high for South Korea's annual export volume.

That said, the current growth trajectory is deeply tied to the global AI investment cycle. Continued infrastructure buildout is expected to sustain chip demand and pricing, but any cooling in capital expenditure could amplify volatility, given the outsized role semiconductors now play in the country's export profile.
