During the upcoming May Day holiday, Beijing will launch more than 2,000 unique activities to entertain residents and tourists. Various districts will also roll out diverse programs to offer in-depth exploration of the city. Among them, Tongzhou District will organize over 400 themed events centered around the Grand Canal, linking cultural landmarks across the area to showcase the blend of ancient canal heritage and the modern vibrancy of the sub-center.
Several scenic spots, including the Zhoukoudian Ruins, will offer free admission during the holiday. For the first time, the Beijing Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau has introduced six "Color Walk" city micro-tour routes, covering cultural sites such as the White Pagoda Temple and Dongyue Temple, trendy landmarks like 77 Cultural and Creative Park, and historical resources including the Lugou Bridge and Wanping City. These routes allow visitors to experience the capital's rich history and contemporary energy.
In Fangshan District, attractions like the Zhoukoudian Ruins, Yunju Temple, and Shihua Cave will be open free of charge. Fengtai District has released a "light wellness and slow travel" guide featuring flower viewing, hot springs, trendy tea drinks, and seasonal delicacies. Pinggu District's vast peach blossom fields and leisure festivals add to the holiday atmosphere.
The tourism bureau has recommended three types of suburban travel routes themed around music, family, and leisure. The music-themed route highlights events like the Yanqing Super Strawberry Music Festival and the Tongzhou Taihu Jazz Music Festival. Family-friendly destinations include Huangshandian Village and Yuzishan Village, where children can participate in creative workshops and nature education programs. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore cycling and hiking routes in areas such as Jietai Temple and Yanqi Lake.
A "Greenway Village Café Map" has been created, featuring 129 rural cafés along scenic greenways. These cafés, set in courtyards, campsites, and ancient villages, blend local flavors with leisurely charm.
Over 1,400 commercial performances will be held during the holiday, including events at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Beijing Opera House, and Meilanfang Grand Theatre. Concerts by Mayday and Zhou Huajian will each feature three consecutive shows. New productions such as the play "Emerald City" and Wagner's opera "Siegfried" will debut.
Numerous intangible cultural heritage activities will also take place. Beijing Enamel Factory will host a cloisonné festival, while Wangfujing's Shengxifu will hold cultural displays and sales. The Fenghuangling Scenic Area will organize a non-legacy garden fair featuring works from Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei.
In Tongzhou District, the "Journey on the Canal" project will use a 3.5-kilometer stretch of the Grand Canal as a natural stage, combining light shows, riverside scenery, and live performances to create an immersive cultural experience. The district has also designed five themed tours covering family fun, music, flower appreciation, and in-depth exploration of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
Changping District will introduce five new experiences, including cultural performances at the Ming Tombs and nighttime tours at the Juyongguan Great Wall. The Da Yunhe Source Heritage Park will host a tourism and culture season featuring folk music, Peking opera, and classical dance.
Municipal parks will offer over 60 holiday activities, blending cultural heritage with modern leisure needs. These include science education, exhibitions, sports, markets, and performances tailored to different age groups. Parks like the Lu County Ancient City Site Park and Zizhuyuan Park have created scenic pathways and themed flower displays, enhancing the visitor experience with rich botanical diversity and cultural elements.
Activities are designed to be all-ages friendly, with interactive programs for families, improved facilities for seniors, and art markets for young enthusiasts. From optimized routes to enhanced services, Beijing’s parks aim to provide a comfortable and enjoyable holiday atmosphere for all.
