Vessel Count Near Strait of Hormuz Exceeds 700, According to Firm

Maritime analytics firm Signal Group reports that as of July 15, a total of 728 tankers, both empty and laden, were positioned around the Strait of Hormuz. This figure comprises 394 vessels in ballast and 334 vessels carrying cargo.

Senior market analyst Maria Bertzeletou noted in a weekly report that within the Persian Gulf waters, there were 168 empty tankers and 175 loaded tankers.

In the Gulf of Oman, located to the east of the Strait of Hormuz, the count stood at 226 empty tankers and 159 laden ones.

Breakdown of Empty Tankers

Among all the empty vessels, 115 are classified as Very Large Crude Carriers, each capable of holding approximately 2 million barrels of oil.

A further 46 are Suezmax tankers, with a capacity of around 1 million barrels each.

Additionally, 75 are Aframax tankers, each able to load about 750,000 barrels.

Since the escalation of tensions on July 6, the proportion of tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz with transparent ownership details has declined to 45%. This compares to a figure of 67% during the period of the interim peace agreement.
