Apple Boosts Foldable iPhone Inventory by 20%, TSMC and Foxconn Secure Additional Orders

Apple is signaling strong confidence in its first foldable iPhone by significantly increasing inventory preparations beyond initial targets, with its key Taiwanese supply chain partners now fully engaged in mass production readiness.

According to sources cited by Taiwanese media, Apple has raised its supply chain inventory levels for foldable phones by approximately 20% compared to original plans. This adjustment will result in increased orders for Foxconn, Largan Precision, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Key components are expected to begin shipping between late Q2 and Q3 this year, with the product's official launch scheduled before year-end.

Recent comments from Foxconn Chairman Young Liu provide further evidence supporting these developments. Liu stated that a major global client maintains "strong confidence" in its upcoming foldable product, describing the customer as a world-leading company with exceptionally high standards. Market observers widely believe Liu was referring to Apple.

Apple's entry into the foldable market is expected to significantly boost the segment's growth. TrendForce projections indicate that with Apple's first foldable device launching in the second half of 2026, global foldable smartphone penetration could rise from 1.6% in 2025 to over 3% by 2027.

Four major Taiwanese manufacturers have established clear roles in the supply chain. Foxconn will handle final assembly, TSMC will produce processors, Largan Precision will supply high-end camera lenses, and Shin Zu Shing will provide crucial hinge components.

Current operations across the supply chain have fully commenced, marking the product's official transition into mass production preparation phase.

The foldable iPhone is expected to carry a price tag around $2,000, featuring a 7.8-inch crease-free inner display and incorporating new technologies including under-display sensors. Reports suggest Touch ID will be integrated into the power button, marking the return of fingerprint recognition.

The foldable iPhone represents part of Apple's strategy to develop a higher-end "Ultra" product line, which may also include next-generation AirPods and high-end MacBook Pro models with touchscreens. This pricing and positioning indicates Apple views foldable devices as vehicles for brand premiumization rather than mass-market products.

Among all components, the hinge is considered the most critical structural element for foldable phones. Apple has reportedly co-developed a high-strength liquid metal hinge technology with suppliers, featuring low deformation and high toughness characteristics that theoretically enhance folding durability while maintaining refined handling.

This technological approach reflects Apple's consistent high standards for product quality and user experience as it enters the foldable market. Liu emphasized that although this client's foldable device will launch later than competitors, it "will definitely introduce a mainstream model" meeting extremely high customer standards.

Market data shows global foldable smartphone penetration reached only 1.6% in 2025, representing a relatively limited market size. However, following Apple's expected entry in late 2026, penetration could exceed 3% by 2027, nearly doubling current levels.

Apple's substantial inventory increase, combined with full supply chain activation, demonstrates the company's considerable confidence in the commercial prospects of its first-generation foldable iPhone, leveraging its extensive user base and brand influence to potentially redefine this market segment.
