Data released by the Hang Seng Index Company shows that the Hong Kong stock market, represented by the Hang Seng Composite Index, rose by 10.9% in July. The Hang Seng Index and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index increased by 13.1% and 13.9%, respectively. Meanwhile, the Hang Seng Volatility Index and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Volatility Index fell by 17% and 11%, settling at 21 and 24.
The Hang Seng Tech Index, which tracks leading Hong Kong-listed technology companies, gained 8.0% in July. The Hang Seng Bio-Tech Index, which follows large-cap biotech firms listed in Hong Kong, rose 9.8%. The Hang Seng Stock Connect China 500 Index, reflecting the performance of the 500 largest companies in Hong Kong and Mainland China, recorded a decline of 1.4% in July. The Hang Seng A-Share Connect 300 Index, which tracks the 300 largest companies in Mainland China, fell by 7.0%.
Among the industry indices within the Hang Seng Composite Index, non-essential consumer goods performed best in July, gaining 19.2%, while the industrial sector performed worst, declining by 8.2%. Within the broader Hang Seng Index series, the Hang Seng Composite Industry Index - Non-Essential Consumer Goods was the top performer, rising 19.2%, followed by the Hang Seng Stock Connect Non-Ferrous Metals Industry Index, which gained 18.4%, and the Hang Seng Stock Connect China Private Enterprises Index, which increased by 17.7%.
In the thematic index series, the Hang Seng Stock Connect China Mainland Banks Index performed best in the Hong Kong market, rising 14.1%, while the Hang Seng Stock Connect China & Hong Kong Innovative Drug Selection 50 Index was the top performer in the Mainland/cross-market segment, gaining 6.9%. Within the ESG index series, the Hang Seng China Enterprises ESG Enhanced Index performed best in the Hong Kong market, increasing by 14.6%, and the Hang Seng Mainland & Hong Kong Sustainable Development Corporate Index was the top performer in the Mainland/cross-market segment, gaining 6.2%.
In the factor index series, the Hang Seng Large & Mid Cap Total Selection Low Volatility Index, which tracks the "low volatility" factor, rose 12.1% in July, outperforming all other factor-based total selection indices in the Hong Kong market. Conversely, the Hang Seng A-Share Total Selection Low Volatility Index fell 5.6%, and the Hang Seng Stock Connect China Total Selection Low Volatility Index gained 3.9%, making them the better performers in the Mainland and cross-market segments, respectively. The Hang Seng Stock Connect Greater Bay Area Composite Index declined by 3.0%.
Within the industry and thematic/factor/strategy sub-indices, the best performers were consumer services, which rose 11.3%, and quality growth, which gained 13.0%. As of July 31, the total assets under management for products passively tracking the Hang Seng Index Series stood at approximately $112.54 billion, an increase of 6.2%. The assets under management for exchange-traded products linked to the Hang Seng Index, Hang Seng China Enterprises Index, and Hang Seng Tech Index were approximately $22.3 billion (up 9.3%), $8.0 billion (up 2.3%), and $40.3 billion (down 0.4%), respectively.
