Canada's Ambassador to U.S. to Step Down; Former BlackRock Executive Wiseman Tipped as Potential Successor

Deep News12-10

As Canada engages in critical trade negotiations with the U.S. and Mexico, its ambassador to Washington is preparing to depart, with Prime Minister Mark Carney considering a former BlackRock executive for the role.

Kirsten Hillman, Canada's ambassador to the U.S. and chief trade negotiator, has informed Carney of her decision to step down from both positions in the new year.

In a statement, Hillman said, "It has been the greatest privilege of my career to serve Canada and Canadians during a pivotal period for Canada-U.S. relations."

According to sources familiar with the matter, former BlackRock executive Mark Wiseman is a leading candidate for the ambassadorship, though no final decision has been made. It remains unclear who will succeed Hillman as chief negotiator.

The USMCA trade agreement is set for formal review in 2026—a process of vital economic importance for Canada. Failure to renew the pact would trigger an annual rolling review process that could ultimately lead to termination, casting uncertainty over Canada's investment climate.
