Delivery data for May in the domestic new energy vehicle market has been released.
Driven by promotional activities during the Labor Day holiday, regional auto shows, and concentrated new model deliveries, most brands reported month-on-month growth.
Leapmotor (09863) set a new record with monthly deliveries exceeding 80,000 units, while the three major players, NIO (09866), Li Auto (02015), and XPeng (09868), all reached the milestone of over 30,000 monthly deliveries.
Leapmotor was the standout performer in May.
Data shows the brand's global deliveries for the month reached 81,569 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of nearly 81%, setting another new monthly high in the brand's history.
Specifically, the A10 model delivered over 20,000 units in a single month, and new orders for the D19 model remained above 10,000.
By the end of May, the cumulative global sales of Leapmotor's B01 and B10 models had surpassed 200,000 units, while the cumulative global sales of the C-series exceeded 800,000 units.
According to plan, the new C10, C11, and C16 models will launch in June, and the D99 will begin pre-sales this month.
For overseas markets, the Leapmotor Lafa5 is set to debut at the Hong Kong Auto Show and will subsequently enter 28 international markets.
NIO followed closely, successfully recovering from a short-term dip the previous month.
In May, NIO delivered 37,705 new vehicles, a 62.3% increase year-on-year and a 28.44% rebound month-on-month, marking the third-highest monthly delivery figure in the company's history.
All three of its brands performed well: the main NIO brand delivered 20,013 units, the Ledao brand exceeded 10,000 monthly deliveries again after five months with 12,029 units, and the Firefly brand delivered 5,663 units.
NIO indicated that sales of its flagship ES9 model were not fully realized in May, and the five-seat version of the ES8 will debut in July.
With subsequent new models arriving, there is still room for growth in the second half of the year.
Li Bin previously mentioned in the Q1 earnings call that NIO plans to launch three to five new products annually, with models like the ET5, ET5T, EC6, and ES6 set for iterative updates starting next year.
Li Auto experienced both year-on-year and month-on-year declines, but its overall volume remained above 33,000 units.
In May, Li Auto delivered 33,350 new vehicles, an 18.37% decrease year-on-year and a slight 2.16% drop month-on-month.
However, the Li Auto i6 has consistently delivered over 20,000 units for three consecutive months, securing a top-three position in the pure electric SUV market.
Regarding new models, the new Li Auto L9 was officially launched and began deliveries in May, with over 10,000 firm orders secured within two weeks of sales opening.
Li Auto stated that the new L9 is expected to deliver approximately 8,000 units in the second quarter, and monthly sales are projected to steadily exceed the average of the previous L9 model after production ramps up in the third quarter.
Additionally, the new Li Auto L8 is planned for release by the end of June.
XPeng continued its moderate recovery trend.
In May, XPeng delivered 32,158 new vehicles, a 3.73% increase month-on-month, but a slight 4.08% decrease year-on-year, marking the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year decline.
As the currently most-watched model, the XPeng GX launched on May 20, securing 24,863 firm orders within 12 hours, with the Ultra flagship version accounting for over 80%.
Delivery lead times for some configurations have now extended to 14 weeks, posing a test for production ramp-up.
XPeng stated that it has made advance production capacity preparations at its Guangzhou base with partners.
According to the plan, four global models will be delivered in the second half of the year.
He Xiaopeng stated the goal is to achieve stable overseas monthly sales exceeding 10,000 units in the fourth quarter, aiming to double full-year overseas sales year-on-year.
Other brands also reported solid results.
Xiaomi Auto delivered over 30,000 units in May, reaching this milestone for two consecutive months.
Harmony Intelligent Drive delivered 46,122 units in May, achieving both year-on-year and month-on-month growth, with cumulative deliveries in the first five months up 26.5% year-on-year.
Zeekr delivered 34,377 units in May, an 81.8% year-on-year increase, marking the fourth consecutive month of double growth in both metrics.
Nearly half of its sales came from the 9-series and 8-series models, and the brand's average transaction price per vehicle increased by 52.4% year-on-year.
Aion Haobo BU sold 33,140 units in May, with the Aion i60 again exceeding 10,000 monthly sales.
Furthermore, IM Motors delivered 10,023 units, Eπ Technology delivered 24,830 units, and Arcfox sold 17,943 units, all achieving varying degrees of month-on-month or year-on-year growth.
Looking at the overall market, the China Passenger Car Association estimates that retail sales of passenger vehicles in May reached approximately 1.52 million units, a nearly 10% increase month-on-month.
Within this, new energy vehicle retail sales were about 950,000 units, up 12% month-on-month, with market penetration expected to reach 62.5%, potentially setting a new historical high.
The association's analysis indicates that the combined effect of the Labor Day holiday, regional auto shows, and manufacturer promotions boosted market activity.
New models launched around the Beijing Auto Show have gradually begun deliveries, with production ramp-ups and accelerated deliveries jointly supporting the renewed rise in new energy vehicle penetration.
