Stock Track | Zillow Plunges 5.57% in After-Hours Trading Despite Q1 Earnings Beat, Weak Guidance and Declining Traffic Weigh

Stock Track05-07

Zillow Group's stock experienced a significant decline of 5.57% during after-hours trading on Wednesday. The sharp sell-off followed the company's release of its first-quarter 2026 financial results.

Despite reporting a strong quarterly performance with adjusted earnings per share of $0.53, beating the analyst consensus of $0.46, and revenue of $708 million, which also exceeded expectations, investors focused on concerning underlying metrics. The company reported a 3% decline in traffic to its sites and apps, with average monthly unique users falling to 220 million. Furthermore, Zillow's second-quarter guidance for adjusted EBITDA, in a range of $150 million to $165 million, came in significantly below the consensus estimate of approximately $190 million.

Analysts noted that the market reaction highlighted investor concerns over the company's future profitability amid increased legal costs and advertising spending, which are expected to pressure margins in the current quarter. The decline represents a classic "sell-the-news" event where high expectations were already priced into the stock ahead of the earnings report, and the weaker-than-anticipated outlook triggered the sell-off.
