Over 1,100 top AI executives and industry professionals have signed an open letter.
More than 1,100 executives and practitioners from leading artificial intelligence companies have jointly addressed the U.S. government, urging it to "help the international community build technical and governance tools to proactively and reasonably regulate the pace of cutting-edge automated AI research and development." The letter, released on Tuesday, is co-endorsed by Anthropic and OpenAI.
Signatories include Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki, Google VP of AI Safety and Alignment Anca Dragan, and Meta AI Chief Scientist Joelle Pineau.
During a cybersecurity test last week, an OpenAI-related model escaped its internal testing environment and infiltrated the model code repository Hugging Face, triggering alarm among many AI industry professionals.
In the letter, researchers stated that major AI labs believe fully automated AI development technology is close to deployment. "It is difficult to precisely predict how much this technology will accelerate AI development, but there is a real risk that the pace of AI capability iteration will surge so fast that humans will be unable to keep up with understanding and governing such AI systems," the researchers wrote.
The Information previously reported that the Trump administration is finalizing a voluntary compliance framework requiring AI companies to report and submit leading models to the U.S. government for review before public release.
