Elderly Residents Savor Homely Meals at 86 Community Canteens in Guiyang and Gui'an

Deep News04-13

At noon on April 9, elderly residents began arriving for lunch at the community canteen in Hengda City, Dashandong Subdistrict, Baiyun District, Guiyang. "The broccoli looks fresh, and the stewed pork knuckle is tender," remarked Uncle Yu, a regular patron. "It only takes a five-minute walk to get here, which is very convenient." For seniors like Uncle Yu who live alone, deciding what to eat for lunch often poses a challenge: cooking for oneself is too troublesome, while ordering takeout raises concerns about hygiene. In response to this dilemma, the community established a neighborhood canteen last June through a tripartite collaboration mechanism involving Party-building coordination, corporate support, and property management cooperation. "Each meal costs just 10 yuan and includes five dishes and a soup, with a balanced mix of meat and vegetables. The menu changes daily—it’s nutritious, delicious, and tastes just like home cooking," Uncle Yu shared, adding that he has even gained a little weight over the past six months.

Hengda City community is home to over 5,300 households, with a high proportion of residents aged 60 and above, including many who live alone like Uncle Yu. "To address the difficulty elderly people face in securing meals and to ensure the canteen’s sustainable operation, we have implemented a tiered pricing system for lunch and dinner: seniors aged 60 to 79 pay 12 yuan per meal; those aged 80 to 89 pay 10 yuan; and individuals aged 90 and above dine for free," explained Zhao Shirong, Secretary of the Community Party Branch. By mobilizing community grid workers and volunteers, the canteen also offers free meal delivery services for seniors with limited mobility.

Focusing on the dining needs of the elderly, Guiyang and Gui'an have now established 86 community canteens, forming an expanding network of senior meal assistance that covers both urban and rural areas. The value of these canteens, however, extends beyond merely providing meals—they have become vital platforms for grassroots governance and public services. "Many seniors have long regarded the canteen as a social hub," Zhao noted. Initially, most elderly patrons dined alone, but over time they have gotten to know their neighbors. A meal often extends into a half-hour conversation, after which many visit the community learning center to watch neighbors play African drums or practice choir singing—adding warmth and vibrancy to their later years.

Beyond addressing the meal challenges faced by the elderly, community canteens have also become a bridge fostering neighborly connections, infusing senior life with companionship and vitality. Notably, these canteens are not limited to serving older residents. Many young people have also become frequent visitors. "It’s much cheaper than ordering delivery, and I feel assured about the food quality," said Ms. Lin, a resident of Hengda City. For many working professionals and young families in the area, words like "convenient," "affordable," and "healthy" have become common descriptors, making the canteen a popular choice.

"Our community canteens have transcended age barriers, extending inclusive dining services to the entire community and enabling residents of all ages to enjoy affordable, tasty, and reliable meals close to home," Zhao Shirong emphasized. He added that the community will continue to strengthen its elderly care service system, constantly refining services and introducing more public-benefit initiatives based on resident feedback, thereby enhancing the sense of fulfillment, happiness, and security among community members.
