China Shenhua H1 Net Profit Could Rise Up To 21%: Halting Three-Year Decline, Is A Revaluation On The Horizon?

Stock News07-24 17:17

On July 14, "coal giant" China Shenhua disclosed its first-half performance forecast: it expects attributable net profit to be between 26.3 billion yuan and 29.8 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.9% to 21.1%, significantly exceeding Morgan Stanley's forecast of 26 billion yuan. Core net profit is expected to be between 26.1 billion yuan and 28.1 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 7.4% to 15.6%. Following the positive profit alert, shares of China Shenhua on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (ticker: 01088) surged, rising nearly 3% during the session. As of the close on July 23, the stock had gained over 6% in just eight trading days, showing strength against a generally weak market backdrop.

However, market divergence is significant. Coal prices rose and then fell in the first half of the year, the rainy season weakened power plant daily coal consumption, and port inventories increased. Some investors worry that a cyclical downturn could suppress full-year profitability. On the other hand, the company's fundamentals have been transformed. A massive 133.598 billion yuan asset restructuring has been fully completed, combined with its integrated coal, railway, port, and chemical business model, allowing China Shenhua to emerge from a period of declining mid-year net profit for three consecutive years (2023-2025).

When a coal giant, which had seen net profit fall for three straight years, delivers a first-half report with a maximum profit increase of over 20% after completing a 133.5 billion yuan asset acquisition, the market needs to reassess not just the earnings elasticity but the new direction of this "coal-electricity integrated" behemoth.

Earnings Cycle Reversal, The Billion-Yuan Restructuring Unlocks Growth Potential

Breaking down the performance, signals of a cyclical turnaround for China Shenhua are emerging. In the first quarter of 2026, due to three main factors, China Shenhua's profitability weakened temporarily. During the period, the company achieved revenue of 70.397 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 1.17%, but attributable net profit was only 10.667 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 10.73%. The three main reasons for the Q1 profit decline were: the impact of rising spot coal prices on the company's coal selling prices was less than expected (actual average selling price was 487 yuan/ton, lower than the market expectation of 502 yuan/ton); lower-than-expected coal sales volume; and a 62.2% year-on-year decrease in investment income from associates.

Looking at the business structure, coal remains China Shenhua's core business, but faces short-term volume and price pressure. In the first quarter of 2026, the coal division's revenue increased slightly by 0.2% year-on-year, mainly due to a 21.2% increase in purchased coal sales volume, but gross profit and total profit fell by 9.4% and 12.2%, respectively. The power segment is the key cyclical hedging tool. In 2025, power generation business revenue was 82.708 billion yuan, accounting for 28.04% of total revenue, making it the second-largest revenue source after coal. The logic of integrated synergy was fully validated in the Q1 report: the average domestic electricity sales price fell 3.1% year-on-year, but total electricity sales volume increased by 11%. Relying on its own pithead coal to lower fuel costs, the unit electricity sales cost decreased by 4.4% year-on-year, and the gross profit of the power generation segment increased by 9.6% year-on-year.

At that time, the market was conservative about China Shenhua's full-year profit expectations. However, the better-than-expected recovery in Q2 confirms the company's growth inflection point. Specifically, for the first half of the year, China Shenhua's net profit midpoint is around 28.05 billion yuan. Excluding the 10.667 billion yuan from Q1, Q2 net profit is estimated to be between 15.6 billion and 19.1 billion yuan, a sequential increase of 46% to 79%. Morgan Stanley noted that the company's first-half performance was better than its forecast of 26 billion yuan, with Q2 net profit growing 23% to 51% year-on-year. The Q2 outperformance mainly reflects higher year-on-year coal prices (especially in Q2) and increased profit contributions from the coal chemical, railway, and port businesses. The Q1 "stress test" did not breach the company's profit floor, and the Q2 "recovery confirmation" undoubtedly proves the anti-cyclical resilience of China Shenhua's coal-electricity integration model.

It is noteworthy that with the injection of the billion-yuan assets, China Shenhua will achieve a qualitative leap from "endogenous growth" to "exogenous expansion," unlocking its long-term growth ceiling. In the first half of 2026, China Shenhua completed the acquisition of equity stakes in 12 core enterprises from its controlling shareholder, China Energy Investment Corporation, for 133.598 billion yuan. Except for Shanxi Jinshen Energy Co., Ltd., the other 11 target companies were consolidated into the company's financial statements. This transaction set a record for the largest share-for-asset acquisition in A-share history.

After the asset injection, the company's resource endowment has undergone a qualitative change. The company's coal resources, coal recoverable reserves, coal production, installed power generation capacity, and polyolefin production reached 68.49 billion tons, 34.5 billion tons, 512 million tons, 60.9 GW, and 1.88 million tons, respectively, representing increases of 64.7%, 97.8%, 56.6%, 27.8%, and 213.3% compared to before the transaction. The integrated scale advantage has been further enhanced. Consequently, the company has significantly raised its 2026 operational targets: commercial coal production target is up 55.5% to 513 million tons, coal sales target is up 42.1% to 618 million tons, and power generation target is up 28.8% to 288.1 billion kWh. The capital expenditure plan has been simultaneously raised by 47.2% to 56 billion yuan, with increases of 71.5% and 120.5% for power generation and coal chemicals, respectively. The company's full-year 2026 revenue target is 360 billion yuan, marking a new level of overall operational scale compared to 2025.

If the past China Shenhua was a giant ship sailing steadily on an established course, the post-injection China Shenhua is a ship with a more powerful engine, sailing into a wider sea.

Thermal Coal Enters A Weak Balance Cycle, Valuation Spring Awaits Release

From an industry perspective, amidst the fluctuating coal price cycles, the long-term contract mechanism is likely the core card for China Shenhua to navigate the cycle. According to data from CCTD China Coal Market Network, the thermal coal price center in the first half of 2026 rose significantly. The spot price of 5500 kcal coal at the Bohai Rim port was 842 yuan/ton at the end of June, up 22.74% from the beginning of the year. However, the rainy season dragged down power plant daily consumption, increased port inventories, and led to a phased decline in coal prices, creating pessimistic market sentiment. Supply and demand constraints clearly define the long-term weak balance pattern: domestic raw coal production is contracting year-on-year, normalized safety supervision suppresses new supply, and imported coal cannot fully replace high-calorific value domestic coal. Morgan Stanley pointed out that the peak summer season will arrive after the rainy season, and concentrated restocking by power plants will support coal prices, with the company's Q3 earnings expected to remain stable.

In this context, the long-term contract mechanism may build a safety cushion exclusive to China Shenhua. According to a research report from Zhongtai Securities, in the first half of 2026, the average price of Qinhuangdao 5500 kcal long-term contracts was only 686 yuan/ton, a year-on-year increase of just 1%. The company's long-term contract coal accounts for over 80% of its sales. While its elasticity is less than that of pure spot coal companies when coal prices rise, it firmly holds the profit line during a downturn. This characteristic also made China Shenhua relatively resilient in the weakening coal sector during the first half of 2026. In the first half of 2026, rising and then falling thermal coal prices caused the overall coal sector to weaken. Compared to pure coal mining companies, China Shenhua's share price decline was significantly smaller. Its H-share price has risen over 17% year-to-date, showing a clear defensive allocation characteristic by funds, which fully validates the resilience of the integrated asset. Relying on the long-term contract mechanism to build a profit moat, China Shenhua has a strong foundation to weather the cycle.

On the capital market side, China Shenhua possesses both defensive and growth valuation logic, which is gradually opening up valuation recovery space. On one hand, there is the defensive logic: the high dividend payout commitment provides a floor for valuation. The company's long-term commitment to maintain a dividend payout ratio of no less than 65% provides a solid valuation safety margin through stable, sustainable cash dividends. Even if coal prices fall in the short term, the stable dividend yield can offset stock price volatility, making it suitable for a stable core position. On the other hand, there is the offensive logic: the billion-yuan restructuring presents a growth revaluation opportunity. The traditional market defines China Shenhua as a mature cyclical blue-chip, leading to a chronically low valuation center. However, after the asset injection, the company's coal, power, and coal chemical production capacity has achieved leapfrog growth, transforming the company from a mature cash cow into a dual-attribute target of "dividend + growth," offering elasticity for valuation recovery.

However, it is important to note that while China Shenhua is a relatively stable stock in the volatile coal sector, some industry and fundamental risks need to be monitored. For instance, a long-term decline in the coal price center could lead to a downward shift in the valuation of the cyclical sector. Large-scale capital expenditure could suppress free cash flow, limiting the potential for dividend growth. There are also risks associated with asset integration, such as management challenges and underperformance relative to expectations.

In summary, China Shenhua has used an above-consensus half-year report to announce its passage through the cyclical trough. The long-term contract mechanism solidifies the profit base, the billion-yuan restructuring opens a growth channel, and the 65% dividend commitment anchors the valuation floor. Under these three forces, this "coal-electricity integrated" giant is recalibrating the market's cognitive coordinates. However, there is always another side to the coin. If the medium-to-long-term coal price center continues to decline, the valuation system of the cyclical sector could face a systemic downward shift. The 56 billion yuan annual capital expenditure plan also puts pressure on free cash flow, meaning dividend growth potential is not without limits. Furthermore, the integration of assets worth over 100 billion yuan, from management synergy to profit realization, will still require time to be proven.
