Volkswagen and XPeng's First Joint Vehicle Enters Production in China Counteroffensive

Deep News03-13 14:22

Volkswagen AG announced on Friday that the first model co-developed with Chinese electric vehicle maker XPeng Inc. has officially entered mass production. The German automaker plans to launch more than 20 new models in China this year as part of its strategy to regain market share.

The model, named the ID. UNYX 08, is a mid-to-large all-electric SUV and represents a significant part of Volkswagen's largest-ever new energy vehicle offensive in China. In this critical market, Volkswagen is striving to catch up with local competitors such as BYD and Geely.

Scheduled for market release in the first half of this year, the vehicle signals a comprehensive shift in Volkswagen's strategy for the world's largest auto market: developing vehicles locally and accelerating research and development cycles.

Volkswagen previously stated that its new R&D structure in China can shorten vehicle development time by 30%. The ID. UNYX 08 reached mass production in just 24 months.

Ralf Brandstätter, Volkswagen Group's Board Member responsible for its China business, stated, "Our 'in China, for the globe' strategy is delivering results." He added, "With the ID. UNYX 08, we are launching the Group's largest electric vehicle offensive ever in China."

Europe's largest automaker faces another challenging year, with core pressures from tariffs and the battle to reclaim its position in China—its largest single market, where it has been losing ground to local rivals who have been quicker to launch software-rich, lower-priced electric vehicles.

Last year, Volkswagen's sales in China were surpassed by Geely, dropping it to third place. It had already lost its decade-long reign as the sales leader in China to BYD back in 2024.

Including more than 20 all-electric and plug-in hybrid models planned for launch by 2026, Volkswagen aims to introduce a total of 50 new energy vehicles in the Chinese market by 2030.

The ID. UNYX 08 is the result of a technical cooperation agreement between Volkswagen and XPeng established in 2023, with XPeng providing the autonomous driving system and Turing AI chip for the new vehicle.

A second electric vehicle co-developed by the two partners is set to launch later this year.

Both models will be produced at Volkswagen's Hefei plant, which has an annual production capacity of 350,000 vehicles and also manufactures the Cupra Tavascan SUV for export to Europe.
