Former US President Donald Trump stated on Monday that fuel retailers must reduce gasoline prices immediately, cautioning that significant consequences would follow if they failed to comply.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "Gasoline retailers must lower prices now. Price gouging is strictly prohibited and completely illegal. If retailers do not do this, they will face big trouble in the future! The target price should be around $2.50 per gallon."
Last week, Trump indicated he had directed the US Department of Justice to investigate major oil companies, accusing them of not lowering retail gasoline prices in line with declining crude oil costs and alleging these firms were "price gouging."
In late February, following US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, Iran launched retaliatory attacks against Israel and Gulf nations hosting US military bases, which subsequently triggered a sharp increase in oil prices.
