Roland BOEHM, a member of the Board of Managing Directors for International Corporates at Combr>Commerzbank, stated that the industry is navigating uncharted waters in sustainable finance, but the topic has moved far beyond a niche or specialized market concern to become critically important today.
BOEHM elaborated that sustainable finance has evolved into a significant component of the financial framework, regulatory systems, and capital allocation, which he views as a positive development. He emphasized the crucial role of regulatory wisdom, alongside the important parts played by corporations and banks in this process. While acknowledging that more effort is required, BOEHM noted the encouraging progress, stating the industry is "feeling its way across the river" and can now clearly see the direction of the opposite shore.
From a banking perspective, BOEHM cited data from the European market, indicating that sustainable bonds now account for a stable share of approximately 20% in the bond market, demonstrating rapid growth and increasing maturity.
BOEHM pointed out that the market's shift towards high-quality development is vital as it helps reduce premium risks. He stressed that credibility is becoming increasingly important, underscoring the need to establish a standardized, clean market where consumers can invest with confidence, ensuring the market operates effectively. A more transparent and larger market, he concluded, attracts more investors, which in turn brings more financial instruments to help companies secure financing. This supports these businesses in developing excellent products and services. In summary, "green" is no longer a standalone sector.
