Family Offices Maintain Strong Interest in Clean Energy and Sustainable Startups During July

Data from wealth intelligence platform Fintrx reveals that family offices of ultra-high-net-worth individuals completed 57 direct corporate investments in July, with startups in the clean energy and sustainability sectors accounting for over 15% of total allocations. Investors include billionaires John Doerr, Lukas Walton, and John Arnold. While many traditional investors are gradually retreating from green investments, family offices remain undeterred, showing sustained enthusiasm for the sector.

Despite heightened market volatility in July, with significant stock index corrections and surging energy prices, the investment pace of wealthy family offices did not slow. Exclusive data from Fintrx shows that family offices executed 57 direct business investments in July, matching the volume from June. The most notable transaction of the month was Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin securing $10 billion in funding, with Bezos' namesake family office contributing $2 billion. Bezos Expeditions was the most active family office this year, investing in five AI startups in June alone.

Artificial intelligence startups dominated the month's investment activity, while over 15% of capital was directed toward clean energy and sustainability companies. Thermal energy storage startup Antora Energy completed a $550 million Series C financing round, with participation from venture capital veteran John Doerr. Doerr's private venture firm Foris Ventures also invested in several clean energy firms, including Pantalasa, Pacific Fusion, and Rondo Energy.

In recent years, investor interest in the renewable energy sector has cooled due to backlash against ESG principles and tighter climate policy regulations under the Trump administration. However, the massive electricity demand generated by artificial intelligence, combined with energy supply crises triggered by conflicts with Iran, has refocused the market on green energy. Morningstar data shows that in the second quarter of 2026, U.S. sustainable-themed funds saw $3 billion in net inflows, ending a streak of 14 consecutive quarters of net outflows.

John Doerr wrote in April while releasing a new action plan for tackling the climate crisis: "A surge in electricity demand, a reshaping of the geopolitical landscape, and disruptive market forces are transforming our world. The key lies in how we respond. Clean energy was once an opportunity; now developing it is a necessity. Only clean energy can provide affordable, stable, and sustainable power supply, ensuring long-term and abundant energy security."

Legendary energy trader John Arnold participated in a $17.8 million Series A round for geothermal startup Heph Energy Technologies, which was successfully completed in July. Arnold said in an interview this February: "I am very bullish on advanced geothermal technology. This technology can develop geothermal resources on a large scale, offering baseload power at competitive costs in many locations."

A survey by Citi Private Bank last September, covering 346 family offices, found that over half of the respondents plan to allocate to sustainable theme investments over the next five years. As traditional investors exit, family offices continue to bet on the renewable energy sector. A November survey from Bank of America indicated that as wealth transitions to the next generation, younger heirs will drive family investment decisions, potentially sustaining and even increasing support for green investments. More than 50% of family office heads expect their successors to maintain or expand capital allocation to sustainable and impact investments.

Walmart heir Lukas Walton, through his family office Builders Vision, promotes environmental and sustainable projects via both investments and philanthropy. In July, Builders Vision teamed up with Grok Ventures, the private investment arm of Atlassian co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes, to co-lead a $43 million Series A round for synthetic aviation fuel company Lydian.
