Authorities at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport recently intercepted a passenger attempting to illegally bring a large sum of currency into the country. Customs officers discovered $1.645 million, equivalent to over 11 million Chinese yuan, which had not been declared.

The incident occurred when officers from the Guangzhou Baiyun Airport Customs, conducting routine inspections of an incoming flight, identified suspicious images during an X-ray scan of a passenger's luggage. The passenger had chosen the "Nothing to Declare" channel for clearance. The officers immediately stopped the individual for a further inspection, leading to the discovery of numerous bundles of U.S. dollar banknotes inside the luggage.

Upon counting, the total amount of seized U.S. currency was confirmed to be $1.645 million. Customs officials issued a reminder that, according to relevant laws and regulations, cash is considered a restricted item for import and export. Passengers entering China must declare to customs if they are carrying more than 20,000 yuan in Chinese currency or foreign currency equivalent to over $5,000, and they should use the "Declare" channel for clearance.
