In January 2024, Tianjin's "Regulations on Promoting the Development of Intelligent Connected Vehicles" took effect, making it one of the earlier cities in China to legislate for the commercial operation of autonomous passenger transport. The city has opened a cumulative 5,389 kilometers of ICV test roads, with the Xiqing National-level Internet of Vehicles Pilot Zone actively progressing tests with no safety driver in the vehicle. A tiered parts inventory mechanism will be established for special components like autonomous sensors and steer-by-wire chassis, with dedicated workstations set up in core service centers to accommodate the round-the-clock, high-frequency operational rhythm of driverless fleets.

The core breakthrough of this collaboration lies in joint standard development and digital synergy. The partners will jointly formulate a specialized Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for autonomous vehicles, covering the entire workflow from inspection upon entry, specialized repairs, full-vehicle calibration re-inspection, to compliant handover. This aims to create a replicable and scalable industry maintenance standard. Furthermore, the partners will integrate their respective operation, maintenance dispatch, and settlement digital systems. This will enable fully automated online workflows for reporting issues, assigning tasks, performing repairs, and reconciliation, significantly reducing fleet operation and maintenance coordination costs.

Scaling Commercial Viability

A stable and efficient maintenance system is a core pillar for achieving scalable commercial profitability in autonomous driving. Pony.ai has already established a globally standardized fleet operation system, with its seventh-generation Robotaxi achieving a positive unit economic model in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. According to the company's plan, it aims to operate in over 20 cities globally by 2026, with its fleet size exceeding 3,500 vehicles. By leveraging JD Auto Service's nationwide service network, the company can rapidly establish maintenance support in new operational cities, continuously reduce comprehensive costs for vehicle servicing and parts procurement, minimize losses from prolonged vehicle downtime, ensure sufficient capacity during peak periods, and stabilize the passenger travel experience.
