SpaceX is offering additional compensation to encourage employees to temporarily relocate and help bring the supercomputers at its Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 data centers into production and online.
According to internal emails obtained by media outlets, volunteers are required to work on-site in Memphis, Tennessee, or Southaven, Mississippi, for six weeks.
Employees taking part in the program will receive a 20% supplement on their base salary or hourly wage during the assignment, along with a bonus tied to project performance. All transportation and relocation-related costs will be covered by the company.
Applicants must have a strong performance record, and the company will prioritize those who have been with the firm for more than one year. Candidates do not need prior management experience, though construction-related experience is considered a plus. Personal initiative is viewed as the most important qualification.
The initiative is referred to internally as "Operation Surge" and has been in place at least since August 2026. It was originally set to end on December 31, 2026, but may be extended.
SpaceX is expanding the Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 data centers to respond to explosive growth in its AI computing business. Revenue from the computing leasing business has surged and now accounts for nearly half of the company's total quarterly revenue.
This is a familiar tactic for SpaceX: during the Starship development phase in 2022, it also offered salary increases of 10% to 25% to attract employees to relocate to launch sites. SpaceX declined to comment on the internal emails.
