Agricultural Bank of China (01288) is scheduled to announce its first-quarter financial results on April 29, with Citi anticipating performance that will surpass market expectations. Consequently, the bank has initiated a 30-day positive catalyst observation period for ABC. Citi projects that ABC's first-quarter revenue and profit will increase by 10% and 4.5% year-on-year, respectively. This growth is primarily attributed to robust loan expansion, net interest margin improvement, and steady non-loan income growth. Citi has set a target price of HK$6.94 for ABC and maintains a 'Buy' rating. The bank explained that it expects ABC's loan growth to reach 9.5% year-on-year. Benefiting from government-related borrowing, which is less sensitive to loan pricing, the net interest margin is forecast to expand by 2 basis points quarter-on-quarter to 1.24%. Additionally, non-interest income is projected to grow by over 10%, while asset quality is expected to remain stable. However, ABC may utilize its strong revenue growth to increase provisions for potential future needs.
