OpenAI is preparing to launch an intelligent speaker as its first foray into hardware products.
According to a report on July 14, the company is developing a screenless, portable smart speaker designed to serve as a personable AI companion for home environments.
This device will integrate the capabilities of ChatGPT and is expected to enhance its personalization features as it gains a deeper understanding of the user.
The report cites sources indicating that OpenAI plans to announce the product this year with a target launch in 2027, but a lawsuit filed by Apple alleging theft of trade secrets could disrupt this timeline.
Screenless Speaker Emphasizes "Human-Like" Connection
As reported, the core design philosophy of this smart speaker is to create a "warm" AI presence in the home, moving beyond the conventional concept of a voice assistant device.
It will support controlling smart home devices, playing media content, answering questions, handling message replies, and will fully leverage ChatGPT's suite of functions.
OpenAI believes the product's key competitive advantage lies in its "personality" and its ability to form human-like connections with users. The device incorporates mechanical components enabling autonomous, dynamic movements to create a sense of "liveliness."
OpenAI envisions the device proactively anticipating user needs, pushing relevant information in advance, and gradually evolving into an "expert advisor" for the user's daily life. This design logic stands in contrast to traditional passive voice assistants, which typically respond only when explicitly summoned.

Regarding voice interaction, the device will utilize an advanced version of OpenAI's new GPT-Live voice mode launched this month. Apple Lawsuit Introduces Uncertainty
OpenAI's hardware strategy faces significant legal uncertainties.
It was mentioned that Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI last week, accusing the company of deliberately orchestrating the leak of information about unreleased Apple products by its employees to serve OpenAI's own hardware R&D plans. Apple is demanding OpenAI destroy all related materials, redesign its products, and ensure they do not incorporate Apple technology.
