South Korean internet giant Naver announced on Thursday that it has invested in a US-based startup that develops floating data centers powered by ocean waves, though the company did not disclose specific financial details.

Naver stated that this latest investment in Oregon-based Panthalassa is part of its broader effort to expand artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure through global partnerships. Founded in 2016, Panthalassa is focused on developing autonomous floating data centers driven by wave energy, designed to operate AI workloads at sea without requiring landfall.

Computational results are transmitted back to land via low-earth orbit satellite connections, such as SpaceX's Starlink. The company plans to deploy its latest wave energy platform for demonstration later this year and aims to achieve commercialization by 2027.
