The publication of the report "Only Barren Deserts, No Barren Lives – These Touching Stories from the Vast Gobi" has sparked a fervent response on the campus of China University of Petroleum (East China).
The Department of Petroleum Exploration (now the School of Geoscience and Technology), where the "three brothers" Jiang Renyu featured in the report once studied, promptly organized discussions among faculty and students in the form of a micro Party lecture.
"The story of the three senior alumni joining hands and heading to Tarim over 30 years ago has deeply moved me," "They planted their ideals where the motherland needed them most, giving their youth a vaster frontier," and "I want to follow in their footsteps and live a life worthy of pride" were among the sentiments shared.
Doctoral student Wang Junran said excitedly, "I have read this report many times! What moved me most was the belief of the youth striving in the west that 'for the motherland, all sacrifices are worth it'." He noted that among his peers, the number of graduates choosing to work in oil fields in western regions like Xinjiang and Gansu is increasing every year.
Doctoral student Ji Shichao, who participated in research on the developmental characteristics of shale gas reservoirs, found the scenes of scientific research攻关 in the report highly relatable. "Every core observation, every research topic, and every paper is a step towards concretely realizing the pursuit of 'serving the nation through energy'," he stated. "Where the motherland needs me is where my heart is directed."
"Last year, I took part in the 'Energy Service to the Nation Tour' social practice organized by my school, gaining hands-on experience at the Changqing Oil Field in Shaanxi. From that moment, the seed of 'going to the frontline' was planted in my heart. This report, word for word, resonates deeply with me," reflected doctoral student Fang Xianxu. "I, too, wish to follow the pioneers, using my own efforts to advance energy modernization."
Alumnus Shao Fulin, a 2024 master's graduate who joined the discussion online, immediately transported everyone to the construction site of the Jiqing Oil Field in the eastern Junggar Basin of Xinjiang upon appearing. "I want to tell everyone that being in sync with the development of our motherland is the greatest happiness!" he exclaimed.
