OpenAI is implementing significant changes to its leadership team as the company prepares for a potential initial public offering, possibly as early as this year. The adjustments include a role change for the chief operating officer and temporary leaves for two senior executives due to health reasons.
Brad Lightcap, who has long served as chief operating officer, will transition to a new position as head of special projects, reporting directly to CEO Sam Altman. One of his primary responsibilities will be leading a joint venture established in partnership with a private equity firm to advance the company's enterprise software sales operations.
Denise Dresser, recently appointed as chief revenue officer, will assume some of Lightcap's former duties.
Concurrently, chief marketing officer Kate Rouch will step down from her role to focus on cancer recovery. She plans to return to the company in a more limited capacity once her health permits. OpenAI has initiated a search for a new chief marketing officer.
Additionally, CEO Fidji Simo, who oversees AGI business and coordinates core company operations, will take a leave of several weeks to undergo new treatments for a persistent neuroimmune condition before returning to her position.
These leadership changes occur during a critical period for the company. OpenAI is preparing for a potential IPO and recently completed a funding round this week, raising $122 billion and achieving a company valuation of $852 billion.
The company is also exploring new revenue streams, including the introduction of advertising within ChatGPT. Furthermore, OpenAI faces competitive pressure from rivals such as Google, owned by Alphabet, and Anthropic, which is also anticipated to go public as early as this year.
In a statement, OpenAI affirmed: "We have a strong management team focused on advancing cutting-edge research, expanding our global user base approaching one billion users, and accelerating enterprise-level applications. The company maintains the capability to consistently execute its strategy while preserving stability and growth momentum."
This is not the first time OpenAI has experienced executive turbulence. Following Sam Altman's brief removal in late 2023, the company witnessed several high-profile departures over subsequent months. The company subsequently restructured its board and executive team, significantly expanding its leadership with seasoned professionals possessing marketing, financial, and operational expertise.
Fidji Simo previously served as CEO of Instacart before joining OpenAI's executive team last year to drive product strategy. Recently, she played a crucial role in consolidating the company's fragmented product systems, leading the development of an integrated "super app" combining chatbot services, programming tools, and a browser.
She has also advocated for reducing investment in peripheral projects. Shortly thereafter, the company discontinued support for its AI video generation tool and progressed with testing advertising within ChatGPT.
In an internal memo, Simo stated: "The timing is frustrating as we have an exciting development roadmap and the team is fully engaged. I don't want to miss a single moment. However, the company is in good shape, and we have an excellent team that can step up."
During Simo's leave, OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman will oversee product operations. Other executives, including chief strategy officer Jason Kwon, chief financial officer Sarah Friar, and Denise Dresser, will share her responsibilities.
