On May 19, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae held a summit meeting in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. The two sides reached a consensus on addressing the global energy supply chain crisis and enhancing cooperation in areas such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and crude oil reserve swaps. They also agreed to further deepen bilateral and multilateral security collaboration.

Affected by the turbulence in international markets stemming from the Middle East situation, both South Korea and Japan, which are heavily reliant on energy imports, are facing practical pressures from supply chain disruptions. Against this backdrop, the two leaders decided during the talks to comprehensively strengthen resource security and energy strategy coordination. President Lee Jae-myung pointed out at a joint press conference that the current geopolitical situation has triggered supply chain and energy market volatility, further highlighting the necessity for close cooperation between South Korea and Japan. Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae stated that the two countries have officially launched a bilateral initiative focused on enhancing the resilience of energy supply. They will jointly safeguard regional energy security by exploring mechanisms for mutual swaps of crude oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas, among other measures, and plan to extend such collaboration to other Asian partner countries.

The Andong meeting marks the sixth summit between the leaders of South Korea and Japan since Lee Jae-myung assumed the presidency, and the second interaction this year under the framework of "shuttle diplomacy." The leaders noted that the high-frequency political interactions, including visits to each other's hometowns, fully reflect the deepening of bilateral political trust and are driving the extension of cooperation from capital regions to local areas and broader economic fields. Currently, the governments of South Korea and Japan are committed to setting aside historical disputes and shifting their strategic focus to practical areas such as economic security, research and development in cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, and maintaining regional stability. As a symbol of bilateral friendship, both leaders jointly attended a welcoming dinner and related events that integrated elements of the two countries' traditional cultures after the talks.
