Sony to Increase PS5 Prices Again Due to Soaring Memory Chip Costs

Deep News03-27

Sony's PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro consoles are set to see price increases in the European market, driven by rising memory chip costs. According to sources familiar with the matter, the price hike will be 100 euros, and the PS Portal streaming handheld will also see a simultaneous price increase.

The specific price adjustments are as follows: PS5 Slim with disc drive: Increased from 549.99 euros to 649.99 euros (approximately 5,189 RMB) PS5 Pro: Increased from 799.99 euros to 899.99 euros (approximately 7,185 RMB) PS Portal: Increased from 219.99 euros to 249.99 euros

This will mark the third time Sony has increased PS5 prices in the European market. Previously, Sony implemented price hikes in August 2022 and April 2025, with increases of 50 euros each time.

The primary reason for this price adjustment is the global shortage of memory chips. According to analysis by Omdia, due to surging demand from AI infrastructure expansion, DRAM memory prices are projected to rise by over 60% in the first quarter of 2026. Estimates indicate that memory components account for at least 20% of the total material cost of a PS5 unit.

Although Sony had previously stockpiled DRAM memory in advance to counter the price surge, persistent strong market sales of the PS5 have nearly depleted inventories, ultimately forcing the company to pass the cost pressure on to consumers.

Sony has officially confirmed that the new prices will take effect on April 2, 2026. It remains unclear whether this price increase will affect markets outside of Europe.
