Amidst the vast Kunlun Mountains and the expansive Gobi Desert, in the remote interior of the Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province, stands the Golmud South Station—the largest marshalling yard on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
This critical railway hub connects the provinces of Qinghai, Tibet, Gansu, and Xinjiang. It serves as the vital junction where three major rail arteries—the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the Golmud-Dunhuang Railway, and the Golmud-Korla Railway—converge, acting as a core node on the logistics corridor of the "Sky Railway".
Inside the station's integrated production command center, a massive dispatch screen pulses like a heartbeat, with data on track occupancy and freight marshalling progress updating in real-time. This center is hailed as the "most powerful brain" of the hub's transport operations, directing train after train to be disassembled and reassembled here before continuing their journeys.
Since its official commencement of operations in April 2021, Golmud South Station has accelerated freight handling at a remarkable pace. To date, over 200 million tonnes of coal, steel, construction materials, fertilizers, and agricultural products have been assembled and dispatched from here, continuously flowing to destinations including Tibet, Xinjiang, and Sichuan.
This steel lifeline has effectively broken through the logistics bottlenecks connecting Qinghai, Tibet, and Xinjiang with the rest of the country. It not only robustly supports the smooth and secure flow of supplies into and out of Tibet and Xinjiang but has also become a powerful engine driving coordinated regional economic development in western China, injecting fresh momentum for Qinghai and Tibet to deeply integrate into the Belt and Road Initiative.
"Safety is the lifeline of the railway," explained Wang Tianyi, Deputy Station Master of Golmud South Station. In recent years, the station has continuously promoted equipment upgrades and management innovation, accelerating the transition of safety assurance from reliance on personnel to a combination of physical and technological safeguards, significantly enhancing the station's overall transport safety and security capabilities.
