Recent reports from several major South Korean media outlets have highlighted the latest performance of Chinese automotive brands within the country's imported vehicle market. According to April import registration data released by the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA), Chinese brands achieved a historic feat, registering more vehicles than Japanese brands for the first time and securing a position among the top three countries by import sales volume in South Korea.
Notably, this milestone was accomplished by BYD Company Limited as a single brand, which registered 2,023 vehicles. This figure surpassed the combined total of 1,974 units from three major Japanese brands: Lexus (1,079 units), Toyota (829 units), and Honda (66 units). South Korean media widely view this ranking shift as a significant signal of changing dynamics in the imported car market, indicating the steady global impact of Chinese intelligent manufacturing.
Industry analysts suggest that as South Korean consumers' acceptance of electric vehicles continues to grow, and the strengths of Chinese cars in product quality and intelligent fields like software-defined vehicles become more apparent, Chinese automotive brands are poised to further expand their market share in South Korea's import sector.
Taking BYD as an example, since the official delivery of its first batch of passenger vehicles commenced on April 14, 2025, the company's cumulative sales in South Korea had reached 10,075 units by March 2026. This achievement sets a new record for the fastest time an imported automotive brand has reached this sales volume in the South Korean market.
The journey of China's auto industry represents a long and arduous path of transformation, evolving from a strategy of "trading market for technology" to "trading technology for market," and shifting from "bringing in" foreign expertise to "going out" globally. There was a time when Japanese and Korean cars dominated Chinese streets, and German luxury vehicles defined the high-end market. Today, BYD has made history, using the strength of its single brand to surpass the combined sales of Lexus, Toyota, and Honda in South Korea—the home turf of Hyundai and Kia and one of the world's most fiercely competitive automotive arenas—and enter the top three imported brands.
South Korean consumers are voting with their wallets for the electrification and intelligence of Chinese manufacturing, demonstrating that Chinese automakers, represented by BYD, now possess the confidence and capability to compete head-on with, and triumph over, the world's top-tier brands.
