According to a federal notice released on Monday, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) has formally closed a patent infringement investigation involving Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (005930.KR) and several major American technology firms, after US chip company Netlist reached a settlement with the South Korean chipmaker.

The investigation, as stated in the ITC's notice published in the Federal Register, covered certain dynamic random access memory (DRAM) devices, products containing such devices, and related components. The case was launched in July following a complaint filed by Netlist, which alleged that certain memory products infringed on its patents.

Other respondents in the case included Google, Nvidia, Broadcom, and Super Micro Computer.

The notice said that Netlist and Samsung, along with its two US subsidiaries, jointly requested termination of the investigation on August 18 based on a settlement agreement reached between the parties.

Under the settlement finalized in August, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (005930.KR) signed a five-year agreement with Netlist, granting access to the US company's patent portfolio. These patents cover server dual in-line memory module (DIMM) technologies as well as high bandwidth memory (HBM) related technologies used in artificial intelligence (AI) servers and high-performance computing systems.

Netlist is dedicated to developing advanced memory and storage technologies, including server memory and high bandwidth memory (HBM) solutions for AI computing.

In 2021, Netlist sued Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (005930.KR), accusing the South Korean tech giant of infringing its patents through memory products and other data technologies used in cloud computing servers. Samsung argued that Netlist's patents were invalid and that its own technologies operated differently from those covered by the patents.
