On August 14, the financial regulatory authority released key supervisory indicators for the banking and insurance sectors for the second quarter of 2026. By the end of Q2 2026, the total on-balance-sheet assets of Financial Institutions in China, measured in both local and foreign currencies, reached 498 trillion yuan, marking a 6.6% year-on-year increase.
Among these, large commercial banks held total assets of 221.6 trillion yuan, up 8.5% year-on-year, accounting for 44.5% of the total. Joint-stock commercial banks reported assets of 80.4 trillion yuan, a 6.2% increase, representing 16.1% of the total.
By the end of Q2 2026, the total assets of insurance companies and insurance asset management firms stood at 43.9 trillion yuan, up 6.2% from the start of the year. Within this segment, property insurance companies recorded 3.4 trillion yuan in assets, an 8.4% increase from the beginning of the year. Life insurance companies reported 38.7 trillion yuan, a 6.2% rise. Reinsurers held 879 billion yuan, up 2.5%, while insurance asset management companies had 149.1 billion yuan, a 2.4% increase.
At the end of Q2 2026, financial holding companies reported combined total assets of 29.1 trillion yuan, combined total liabilities of 26.1 trillion yuan, and combined net assets of 3 trillion yuan.
