UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has appointed Dan Jarvis as the nation's new Defence Secretary. This move comes as Starmer seeks to reassert control and prevent a further erosion of his authority, amid an escalating leadership crisis within the ruling Labour Party, following the surprise resignation of John Healey.
Prior to this appointment, Jarvis served as the Security Minister. Before entering politics, his career was in the military, having been an officer in the British Army's Parachute Regiment, with service tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kosovo.
Healey unexpectedly announced his resignation as Defence Secretary on Thursday, following months of disputes with the Treasury over defence spending.
