As asset management giant Grayscale launches its first spot exchange-traded fund for Zcash (ZEC), research chief Zach Pandl has outlined a compelling thesis: ZEC holds three distinct advantages over Bitcoin that could allow it to chip away at the dominant cryptocurrency's market share.
Current data from the Crypto Sectors classification framework shows Bitcoin commands an overwhelming 93% of the monetary sector by market capitalization. Early challengers such as Litecoin (LTC) failed to mount any serious threat, as Bitcoin's powerful network effects have led most investors to overlook alternative digital assets.
Bitcoin is currently trading near $78,645, giving it a market cap of roughly $1.58 trillion. In contrast, Zcash trades at approximately $790, with a market value of about $13.3 billion, placing it 12th among all cryptocurrencies.
While ZEC's value amounts to less than 1% of Bitcoin's, it has surged roughly 19-fold over the past year. Grayscale interprets this not as a sign of futility, but rather as evidence of vast competitive headroom.
Pandl positions Zcash as a challenger with the advantage of coming later to the game, highlighting three key differentiators. The first is financial privacy, which becomes an increasingly central selling point in an era of expanding AI-driven surveillance. The second is quantum resistance, as developers remain focused on the potential risks quantum computing poses to traditional cryptography. The third is Intents technology, which allows users or AI agents to utilize ZEC as a private asset hub without requiring widespread merchant adoption, enabling universal connectivity through Intents.
Based on a five-year supply estimate, Grayscale has constructed a price model with striking projections. If ZEC were to capture just 2% of Bitcoin's market share, the target price would reach $1,622. Should it secure 10% of the market, the target soars to $8,109. Against the current price of roughly $790, these scenarios represent potential gains of approximately 105% and 927%, respectively.
Investors should remain cautious, however. This is a high-risk asset with non-linear price movements, and Bitcoin's transparency, simplicity, and liquidity will continue to underpin its market dominance.
