Various music festivals, concerts, sporting events, and large exhibitions held across multiple locations have become key drivers boosting local cultural tourism. As the May Day holiday approaches, travel enthusiasm continues to rise. Based on an analysis of platform data, this year's May Day holiday is showing new trends: cultural activities and culinary experiences are motivating consumers to travel. Additionally, data indicates strong demand for high-quality travel during this period, with significant increases in related metrics.

Travel motivations are diversifying. Multi-platform data suggests that April 30 will see a pre-holiday travel peak. DiDi Chuxing predicts the ride-hailing peak will start at 3:00 PM on April 30, reach its height at 5:00 PM, and last until 7:00 PM. Overall ride-hailing demand during the holiday is expected to be 23% higher than pre-holiday levels, with out-of-town DiDi demand projected to rise by 56%. Demand for rides to major transport hubs is forecast to increase by 63%. Hellobike expects nationwide hitchhiking demand to exceed 60 million orders during the holiday. The peak travel demand is anticipated on April 29 and 30, while return travel demand is more evenly distributed. Cross-city trips account for 55% of all hitchhiking demand, with journeys over 200 kilometers comprising more than 20%.

A Hangzhou ride-hailing driver noted that orders to high-speed rail stations, airports, and scenic spots have increased noticeably since April 27, with recent orders up about 30% compared to usual days. Holiday travel has become a popular search term. Data from Meituan shows that search热度 for "May Day travel" had surged 140% year-on-year as of April 27.

Cultural activities are a major reason for consumer travel. Various events are significantly boosting the appeal of destination cities. Meituan data indicates popular music festival destinations include Wuhan, Beijing, Luzhou, Shanghai, Changzhou, Nanjing, Chengdu, and Tianjin. Beijing, hosting over 1,400 performances during the holiday, has seen a notable rise in cultural tourism interest. DiDi Hitch data shows that demand for travel to "cultural destinations" like concerts, museums, and stage performances is expected to increase over 36% week-on-week.

Football events are also motivating travel. Provincial leagues are generating widespread spectator enthusiasm, translating into increased consumption. Meituan data reveals that the "Jiangsu Super League" has boosted overall cultural tourism bookings in host cities like Taizhou and Changshu by approximately 20%, while the "Fujian Super League" has led to a more than 10% year-on-year increase in bookings for cities like Quanzhou. DiDi Charging data indicates that self-drive tours following the "Jiangsu Super League" have become a new trend, with charging demand in cities like Yangzhou, Changzhou, and Wuxi expected to rise by 54%, 38%, and 16% respectively during the holiday compared to normal days.

Beyond cultural activities, dining has become another key travel motivator. Many consumers are traveling specifically to smaller cities for signature dishes or local flavors, embarking on culinary-focused trips. Meituan data shows that as local specialties gain popularity, more small towns are becoming key destinations offering unique local experiences. A well-known chicken pot restaurant in Yingde City has attracted more tourists recently due to online buzz. Approaching the holiday, the restaurant receives dozens of inquiry calls daily. Anticipating high demand, the manager has prepared inventory at 1.5 to 3 times the usual weekend levels and increased staffing from 10 to 20-30 people for the holiday period. Hellobike data shows travel interest to Foshan has surged due to a famous chicken pot restaurant, with hitchhiking demand from nearby cities expected to increase 80% year-on-year.

There is also a pronounced trend towards high-quality consumption. Air ticket bookings have increased nearly 20% year-on-year, and bookings for five-star hotels have risen about 40%. In Xinjiang, cultural tourism bookings are up 18% year-on-year, with five-star hotel orders surging 176%. Popular source cities include Beijing, Chengdu, Xi'an, and Shanghai, with the 20-30 age group comprising 54% of travelers. Scenic spots like Sayram Lake, Nalati, and Tianchi Lake are particularly popular. Searches for "small group tours" in Xinjiang have increased 380% year-on-year. A travel company executive reported a roughly 70% year-on-year increase in orders via Meituan, with popular itineraries involving self-drive tours and unique local experiences. Younger travelers are increasingly seeking participatory and interactive experiences, valuing emotional satisfaction from their trips, leading travel agencies to incorporate more engaging activities into their offerings.
