Where can Time’s Person of the Year even go in 2022?\nUp, up, up.Photographer: Samuel Corum/Bloomberg.\nLast week, Time revealed its “Person of the Year.” 2021, of course, has been a year in which humanity has suffered from the brutal effects of an ongoing pandemic, supply-chain crisis and climate change.\nThe person they chose? “Clown, genius, edgelord, visionary, industrialist, showman, cad” Elon Musk for “creating solutions to an existential crisis, for embodying the possibilities and the perils of the age of tech titans, for driving society’s most daring and disruptive transformations.”\nThough not everyone is thrilled by the choice, I, along with my colleagues at Bloomberg Opinion, must admit to spending a lot of time this year pondering the existence of Elon Musk, his Twitter account and his huge influence over financial markets. Plus, as far as years go, Musk has had quite a good one. Let’s run through the highlights.\nHe’s now, on paper at least, the richest person in the world, gaining more wealth in 2021 than Berkshire Hathaway Inc. made in revenue.\n\nIn fact,John Authers has a good comparison between Tesla Inc. and Berkshire. Although Berkshire Hathaway delivers America’s best profits, Tesla’s market cap is way bigger than Berkshire’s. Make sense? Maybe not in a traditional sense, but this is Elon Musk’s financial market now. A company is only as valuable as the sum of its memestock investors.\n\nTo be fair to Tesla, it’s having a good year. It’s become consistently profitable, delivering decent gross margins, and Liam Denning even described the automaker’s third-quarter earnings as “normcore,”which should be taken as a compliment, even if they still don’t quite justify the huge stock price.Chris Bryant just feels bad for all the legacy car producers who don’t have devoted investors to back them up.\nIt’s even coped mostly pretty well with the supply-chain issues that have tripped up other manufacturers. It’s only now that the company is having issues getting hold of raw materials to manufacture EV batteries in the U.S. As Anjani Trivedi puts it,if Tesla is having supply-chain issues, then everyone should be scared.\nMeanwhile, SpaceX has dominated commercial space launches this year. For good reason, too. When adjusted for inflation, the Apollo program had a cost per seat of $390 million, according to the Planetary Society, while the figure for the space shuttle comes in at $170 million. Meanwhile, a NASA audit estimated that the per-seat cost of the SpaceX Crew Dragon comes to $55 million. That’s a bargain!\n\nAdam Minterwrites that SpaceX’s success in winning NASA contracts comes much to the annoyance of Jeff Bezos, who keeps slowing things down with lawsuits.\nBut if there’s one thing that Musk is destined to be known for, it’s his enthusiastic tweeting. At the time of this writing, in 2021 Musk has sent 2,981 tweets. According to him, about 50% of them were written on the toilet. It sort of checks out: All but 15 of them were sent from an iPhone, and when else would a busy CEO get time to doomscroll?\n\nLots of Musk’s tweets are random musings, memes or updates on his companies. But sometimes they cause a bit of trouble — or dictate the price of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or (his favorite) Dogecoin. It’s not just crypto: Musk’s tweets could send any stock soaring. Several times this year,Matt Levine’s Elon Markets Hypothesis — that the way finance works now is that things are valuable not based on their cash flows but on their proximity to Elon Musk — has been proven true. For example, he only had to tweet about getting Floki, a Shiba Inu puppy, for Shiba Inu coin or SHIB to soar in value.\nLet’s also not forget the time he used a Twitter poll to make financial decisions, asking real people on the internet whether he should sell 10% of his Tesla stock. The majority verdict: Yes. Matt points out that, sure, the whole thing is weird, but didn’t he tell everyone what he’d do in advance, “even though he didn’t have to, even though it lowered his selling price and cost him tens of millions of dollars?”Maybe Elon Musk demonstrated a model of disclosure that other CEOs should follow.\nThat said, there are some things happening at Tesla that might need some attention:Six women are suing the company over alleged sexual harassment at a Tesla factory in Fremont, California. Earlier in the year,Tesla paid more than $1 million to a Black former employee who won a ruling that the company failed to stop his supervisors from calling him a racial slur at the Fremont plant.On Wednesday, a Tesla employee was arrested for the murder of another employee in the parking lot of that same factory.\nAs Musk closes out the year, it’s nice to look back on what could have been, and how sad he would be if he’d have taken Tesla private that time he threatened to on Twitter. Public markets have been extremely generous to Tesla. Matt writes that Tesla's cost of capital is incredibly, incredibly low, because it raises money not from a handful of professional private equity investors but from an army of Tesla enthusiasts.
