Lianyungang Gangbu Farm: First Batch of Lilies Harvested and Marketed

Deep News12-02

In early winter, the No. 26 greenhouse at Lianyungang Gangbu Farm's high-efficiency agricultural demonstration park bustled with activity as workers harvested the first batch of mature lilies. The vibrant pink buds of the "Sorbonne" variety stood tall, showcasing their vitality.

On the morning of November 24, Wei Jiandong, deputy director of the park, guided workers in carefully harvesting, sorting, and packaging the lilies. "Pay attention to the number of buds and ensure they are evenly aligned during packaging," he instructed.

The "Sorbonne" lilies, planted in September, were cultivated using an innovative "one bulb, two sprouts" technique. Unlike traditional methods, this approach allows a single bulb to produce two shoots, significantly improving efficiency. With just 6,000 bulbs planted in the No. 26 greenhouse, the farm achieved its desired output while cutting bulb usage by half—reducing costs substantially.

"This method not only enhances land utilization but also strengthens the plants' resilience, resulting in superior flower quality," Wei explained. Currently, the "Sorbonne" lilies are thriving, with plump buds indicating peak maturity.

Workers skillfully cut the stems at the base using specialized tools before sorting and packaging the flowers for market distribution. "We’ve already received inquiries from florists after sharing photos online," a staff member noted.

To maintain consistent quality and stable supply, the farm meticulously oversees every stage—from planting to harvesting. Additionally, staggered harvesting prevents price fluctuations caused by oversupply.

Beyond "Sorbonne," the farm has cultivated 190,000 lilies of various varieties, including "China Red," each offering unique shapes and colors to cater to diverse consumer preferences. To ensure uninterrupted supply during the New Year and Spring Festival seasons, the farm employs phased planting, allowing different varieties to mature at different times.

Moving forward, the park remains committed to high-efficiency, innovative, and sustainable practices, continuously exploring new techniques in floriculture—particularly in winter lily cultivation—to bolster Gangbu’s flower industry.
