Recent reports from multiple international media outlets indicate that TENCENT is in negotiations to exit its equity investments in several Japanese game development studios, with Tokyo-listed company Marvelous being the primary focus of this potential divestment round.
The reports suggest that TENCENT is conducting a case-by-case review of its minority stakes in overseas studios. For investments where strategic synergies have diminished or expected returns have not materialized, the company is reportedly willing to sell shares back to the original management teams, even at a potential loss, to facilitate an exit.
Public information shows that Marvelous holds two major domestic Japanese intellectual properties: the classic life simulation series "Harvest Moon" (Story of Seasons) and the hardcore mecha action game "DAEMON X MACHINA." The company also publishes other titles such as "Rune Factory" and "Senran Kagura," which have established fanbases within the console gaming community, solidifying its position as a well-established mid-sized Japanese game developer and publisher.
In response to these reported developments, TENCENT stated, "Gaming is one of our core businesses. We will continue to fully support our portfolio companies and maintain our long-term focus on and commitment to the Japanese game market."
