Brookfield Asset Management and the Qatar Investment Authority have reached an agreement with UK power generation company Drax Group Plc to invest £2.5 billion ($3.4 billion) in a data center project.
According to a statement released on Tuesday, the first phase of the project will have an installed capacity of up to 100 megawatts and could begin operations as early as the first quarter of 2028, connecting to the existing grid at Drax's power station in northern England.
Subsequent phases will be powered directly by the 2.6 gigawatts of biomass generation units operated by Drax.
The initial investment will be provided by Brookfield and the Qatar Investment Authority.
Data centers are increasingly seen as a major driver of UK economic growth, but lengthy grid connection queues have delayed some projects, with some not expected to connect to the grid until after 2030.
Drax's project, however, is expected to begin operations within two years, potentially bypassing a major bottleneck in the data center industry and bringing new digital infrastructure, investment, and jobs to the region.
Brookfield estimates that the potential total investment, including semiconductor chips, could exceed £20 billion.
