Xiaomi's Strategic Focus on In-House Battery Development

Deep News20:45

During a live broadcast from the Xiaomi automotive factory on the evening of February 27, Xiaomi founder, Chairman, and CEO Lei Jun, along with several Xiaomi experts, discussed the company's vehicle safety system. This was Lei Jun's first live session following the Spring Festival holiday.

When addressing the rationale behind Xiaomi's decision to develop its own battery packs, Lei Jun emphasized that leading automakers must dedicate significant effort to mastering three-electric (三电) technologies—particularly battery technology—to excel in the new energy vehicle sector. He stated, "Five years ago, when we began developing vehicles, we were determined to excel in battery technology. To achieve this, we established a large and highly capable battery R&D team. To gain deeper insights, we even set up our own battery pack factory and became deeply involved in the manufacturing process."

Lei Jun noted that these initiatives have enabled Xiaomi to gain comprehensive expertise in battery technology, improve collaboration with suppliers, and enhance quality and safety control for batteries. Additionally, these efforts contribute to increasing vehicle range and accelerating charging speeds.
