Elon Musk Replies to Nobel Laureate's Challenge to Donate Entire Fortune: I Do Plan to Do Something Along Those Lines

Deep News07:31

As the world's first and only trillionaire, will Elon Musk eventually give away his entire fortune? The public has long questioned what Musk, sitting on a fortune of over a trillion dollars, actually intends to do with it. Other billionaires have donated massive sums, such as MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who has already given away more than $26 billion while still retaining nearly $35 billion in assets.

On social media, some have pleaded with him to donate at least a portion of his wealth, if not all of it. However, Musk's attitude toward philanthropy has always been brutally direct. "I'm in favor of love for humanity, and I think we should try to do things that help people," Musk said on a podcast episode that aired in December 2025. "But it's very difficult." This view comes from a person who also believes that artificial intelligence will render money meaningless.

Because of this, Nobel laureate in economics Daron Acemoglu publicly called out Musk on Monday, issuing a challenge: since money will become irrelevant, is he daring enough to pledge to donate his $1 trillion fortune? Acemoglu posted on platform X on Monday: "A proposal commitment for Elon Musk. This is a chance to cash in on your words. If money will become irrelevant by 2036, why not promise to donate your current assets of approximately $1 trillion to charity by no later than 2036? This would be a highly convincing demonstration of your confidence in AI and the power of technology."

Acemoglu also noted that such a move could reassure people around the world, many of whom are concerned about the political and social influence wielded by billionaires and even trillionaires. He added, "The selected charities should be vetted by a neutral body to confirm they operate efficiently and without ideological bias."

Musk's response was somewhat unexpected. He replied to Acemoglu, stating, "I do plan to do something along those lines!" Although Musk did not elaborate on what exactly this means, it represents a significant reversal from his past stance on philanthropy. He has previously publicly criticized well-known philanthropists like MacKenzie Scott, and not long ago even claimed that her donations were making the world worse.

Musk's Past Philanthropic Stance

On June 27, popular social news outlet Pubity posted on X about Scott's giving, noting that her cumulative $26 billion in donations placed her among the "largest individual donors in history." The ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was indeed confirmed as the top donor by total giving in 2025. Subsequently, a user commented under Pubity's post about Scott, saying, "Too bad she's making the world worse with that money." Musk replied to the user, agreeing with the sentiment: "Unfortunately, yes."

Records show that as of the end of 2025, Musk's foundation held assets of approximately $14 billion, but most of his donations have gone to organizations that closely align with his own business interests. For example, three-quarters of Musk's total donations in 2024, amounting to $370 million, went to a Texas-based non-profit organization run by his top aide. Musk has consistently claimed that philanthropy is difficult to execute, and based on his donation history, most of his giving has been directed toward projects that serve his own interests.

Therefore, this week's statement from the world's richest man on his own platform, X, warrants close attention to see if he can make good on his promise.
