The South Korean National Assembly will convene a two-day hearing starting Tuesday to scrutinize the e-commerce giant Coupang over a massive data breach that compromised the personal information of nearly two-thirds of the country's population.
The hearing will involve six parliamentary committees, including the Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, to examine the data leak and the company's alleged unfair business practices, with 13 current and former Coupang executives already selected as witnesses.
However, Coupang founder Kim Bom-seok, his brother and company Vice President Yoo Kim, and former Coupang Korea CEO Kang Han-seung have submitted statements informing the Assembly they will not attend.
Last month, Coupang confirmed that personal data of 33.7 million users had been leaked, noting that the compromised information included names, phone numbers, email addresses, and delivery addresses.
South Korean police are currently investigating the large-scale data breach.
