Mobile Libraries in Taikang, Henan Promote In-Depth Public Reading

Deep News15:21

On April 23rd, the 31st World Book Day, the Publicity Department of Taikang County in Henan Province collaborated with over ten organizations, including the County Education and Sports Bureau and Xinhua Bookstore, to host the World Book Day and "Public Reading Activity Week" event at the county's People's Square. More than ten tables were set up in a row, filled with a wide variety of books, including literary classics, historical and scientific works, children's picture books, and policy readers. The tables were surrounded by residents, ranging from elderly individuals selecting historical books to young parents choosing picture books for their children. Volunteers in red vests acted as guides, enthusiastically introducing book contents to the public. "These books are only 60% of the original price, practical and affordable!" exclaimed Zhang Jun, a resident of Xuzhuang Community in Maozhuang Subdistrict, who promptly scanned a code to pay after selecting a copy of "Practical Agricultural Technology."

During the event, volunteers from the county's publicity department also integrated the concept of "protecting the young" with reading promotion. Through displays and case explanations, they popularized knowledge on combating illegal publications and protecting copyright, helping the public develop awareness of intellectual property and consciously resist illegal publications and harmful content.

Beyond the Reading Activity Week, to further promote in-depth public reading, the Taikang County Publicity Department has, in recent years, guided the local Xinhua Bookstore to actively explore a "mobile library+" service model. They have carefully selected over a thousand excellent books and periodicals to create multiple mobile reading vehicles. These vehicles not only visit urban communities, parks, and squares but also extend services to towns and villages, continuously improving the supply of reading resources and fostering a strong atmosphere of loving, reading, and benefiting from books. The mobile library van at the county's leisure square is one such example.

At 6 p.m., Wang Linjiang, a resident of Yangxia Subdistrict, arrived at the leisure square. He selected a health and wellness book from a mobile library van and sat at a nearby table to read carefully. "The 'mobile library' is set up here every day, offering free reading and purchasing. It's so convenient to have access to books right at my doorstep!" Wang said with a smile.

"Bringing books into parks and communities allows residents to enjoy the pleasure of quiet reading during their leisure time, effectively promoting cultural dissemination and public reading. It's wonderful!" said Cao Chaoyong, a staff member of the county's cyberspace affairs office.

"The purpose of setting up mobile libraries is to use books as a medium for everyone to share in the fragrance of literature, making reading a lifestyle that can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere, allowing the enduring scent of books to permeate every corner," said Yang Chuanjun, Executive Deputy Director of the Taikang County Publicity Department. He added that the county will continue to uphold the original intention of deepening public reading and enriching cultural heritage, coordinating libraries, bookstore reading corners, and rural libraries to regularly carry out reading activities. They will also continuously innovate the forms of these activities to enhance the city's cultural identity and empower high-quality development.
