The Singapore Exchange (SGX) reported that its stock market operated for 22 trading days in Mar, 26, four more than in Feb, 26.
Stock trading was markedly stronger month-on-month: turnover volume reached 38,066 million shares, up from 26,801 million shares in Feb, 26. Turnover value rose to 52.822 billion Singapore dollars from 38.547 billion Singapore dollars, lifting the securities daily average to 2.401 billion Singapore dollars (Feb, 26: 2.141 billion Singapore dollars). Overall turnover velocity improved to 56 % from 49 % a month earlier.
Derivatives activity also accelerated. Total derivatives volume expanded to 38,307,514 contracts, a 41 % increase from Feb, 26’s 27,135,041 contracts. The daily average derivatives volume climbed to 1,804,456 contracts versus 1,655,304 previously.
Despite the stronger trading activity, total market capitalisation moderated to 1.095 trillion Singapore dollars at end-Mar, 26, down from 1.124 trillion Singapore dollars in Feb, 26, reflecting a small 3 % month-on-month decline. Year on year, however, market value grew 23 % from 890.496 billion Singapore dollars in Mar, 25. The exchange ended the month with 604 listed securities, two fewer than in Feb, 26.
On the SGX Mainboard, turnover value in Mar, 26 totalled 47.670 billion Singapore dollars, 38 % higher than Feb, 26 and 75 % above Mar, 25. Catalist turnover value was 643 million Singapore dollars, up 12 % month-on-month and almost nine times the level recorded a year earlier.
In the derivatives segment, FTSE China A50 Index Futures remained the most-traded contract with 11.048 million contracts in Mar, 26, contributing to equity index futures volume of 17.981 million contracts for the month. Foreign exchange futures volume advanced to 11.717 million contracts, led by USD/CNH and INR/USD futures.
At month-end, open interest across all derivatives stood at 6,244,529 contracts, 1 % higher than end-Feb, 26 and 18 % above Mar, 25.
Among Straits Times Index constituents, DBS Group Holdings Ltd (D05) remained the bourse’s largest company with a market capitalisation of 161.802 billion Singapore dollars at Mar 31, 26, followed by Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp (O39) at 98.608 billion Singapore dollars and Singtel (Z74) at 81.324 billion Singapore dollars.
