Polymarket is reportedly lobbying regulators across Europe to have itself classified as a financial services provider rather than a gambling operation, according to sources familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The platform aims to fall under the European Union's Markets in Financial Instruments Directive, which governs financial services firms, instead of being subjected to gambling-related legislation. Company executives have already met with Nikhil Rathi, the chief executive of the UK's Financial Conduct Authority.
In addition to engaging with the European Securities and Markets Authority and the European Commission, Polymarket has also held discussions with regulatory bodies in several EU member states, with the stated objective of securing operating licenses across the region. This month, the platform joined the European Blockchain Association and has begun talks with other industry groups in Europe.
Polymarket stated: "As we expand our business footprint and global scale, we are committed to engaging openly and early with policymakers and regulators." The European Securities and Markets Authority and the UK Financial Conduct Authority both declined to comment on the matter.
