Intel to Reveal Details of Musk's Terafab Project Involvement to Employees Within Weeks

Deep News08:11

According to a memo sent by Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger last week, the company plans to disclose the "scope and nature" of its involvement in Elon Musk's ambitious "Terafab" chip manufacturing project to employees in the "coming weeks." Gelsinger sent the memo to Intel staff last Friday, two days after the semiconductor giant announced its participation in the Terafab project alongside Musk's companies—SpaceX, xAI, and Tesla Motors. This collaboration could be a significant boon for Intel, which is currently undergoing its latest transformation effort.

Intel has so far revealed few details about its role in the Terafab initiative, and information about the project itself remains limited. In last Friday's memo, Gelsinger described Intel's partnership with Musk's companies on Terafab as a "strategic alliance." He wrote, "Musk's bold vision across artificial intelligence, transportation, communications, robotics, and space travel relies heavily on a sufficient and uninterrupted supply of silicon chips. As a result, Intel is an ideal partner to help him realize that vision."

Musk announced the Terafab project last month, stating that it will involve the construction of two advanced chip fabrication plants in Austin, Texas. The first facility will focus on producing chips for automobiles and humanoid robots, while the second will specialize in chips for space-based AI data centers. The leader of Tesla Motors and SpaceX explained that he is advancing the project because he anticipates that the future chip capacity demands of his companies will far exceed current global production levels. He stated, "Either we build Terafab, or we run out of chips."

The name "Terafab" stems from Musk's goal of producing chips equivalent to one terawatt of computing power annually. He has indicated that this would be roughly double the computing capacity currently available in the United States.
