Petronas has signed a memorandum of understanding through its subsidiary Petronas Malaysia Petroleum Management, with several regional exploration and production operators and Universiti Teknologi Petronas to jointly assess opportunities for enhanced oil recovery in offshore blocks.
The agreement was signed by Petronas, Petronas Carigali, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, PTTEP Sarawak Oil, PTTEP Sabah Oil, and Pertamina Malaysia Eksplorasi Produksi.
Collaborative Goals and Focus
This collaboration aims to evaluate opportunities to increase recovery, extend field life, and unlock additional value from offshore assets through improved oil recovery and enhanced oil recovery technologies.
Under the agreement, the parties will combine the operational experience and technical expertise of Petronas Carigali, PTTEP Sarawak Oil, PTTEP Sabah Oil, and Pertamina Malaysia Eksplorasi Produksi with the research and development capabilities and laboratory facilities of Universiti Teknologi Petronas.
The work will focus on conducting targeted improved and enhanced oil recovery studies supported by laboratory testing, with selected technologies and concepts having the potential to advance to pilot implementation stages.
The signatories stated that this initiative aims to accelerate the deployment of recovery solutions, enhance regional technical capabilities, and support sustainable resource development in offshore basins.

By integrating subsurface understanding, high-performance computing, and operator capabilities, it aims to accelerate the maturation of targeted solutions, unlock additional value from mature fields, and strengthen long-term energy resilience through cross-border cooperation.
Launch of a New Digital Platform
In a separate development, Petronas has also launched the Malaysia Digital Intelligent Hub through its Malaysia Petroleum Management subsidiary. This is a digital platform designed to connect Malaysia Petroleum Management with petroleum arrangement contractors through unified workflows, data, and an intelligent environment.
The company stated that the platform is intended to streamline processes, enhance transparency, and support faster decision-making across the petroleum management lifecycle.
Bacho added that this marks a fundamental shift from navigating multiple systems and touchpoints to a unified, AI-powered platform. The goal is to institutionalize a data-driven way of working, with decisions driven by fast, trusted, and operationally integrated intelligent insights. Ultimately, the Malaysia Digital Intelligent Hub simplifies how petroleum arrangement contractors interact with Malaysia Petroleum Management, enabling them to focus on high-value, high-impact work that truly matters.
