Palantir CEO Alex Karp Voices Widespread Enterprise Discontent with Leading AI Labs

Deep News06-11

Palantir Technologies Inc. CEO Alex Karp has stated that major enterprise and government clients of the AI software firm are dissatisfied with the operational models of leading AI laboratories.

During an interview on CNBC with host Sara Eisen on Wednesday, Karp remarked, "It's not just the general public that has significant issues with the frontier labs. Privately, every single company we work with shares the same view."

Karp explained that many clients believe these AI companies fail to understand actual business needs, focusing instead on inflating "token consumption"—meaning the indiscriminate use of AI computing tokens to create an illusion of high performance through sheer volume.

The widespread integration of AI into business processes across industries has led to soaring costs for using large models. These escalating expenses have raised alarms on Wall Street, increasing scrutiny on the practical efficiency of AI implementation.

Karp stated, "It's not that large language models are unimportant to the world, but the real value is created in the application layer, and that will be the case for at least the next seven years."

These comments come as two leading AI model companies, Anthropic and OpenAI, advance their IPO preparations. OpenAI, led by Sam Altman and the developer of ChatGPT, confidentially filed for an IPO on Monday, following a similar move by Anthropic just a week prior.

Karp told CNBC that the majority of projects Anthropic publicly discusses are "built on the Palantir platform." Although he often disagrees with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Karp described the co-founder as a "tremendously important person" who has achieved a remarkable catch-up.

In recent years, Karp has frequently made headlines for his outspoken political views. He recently aligned himself with the Trump administration, having previously made political donations to campaigns for former Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden.

Former President Trump also publicly praised Palantir on Truth Social, mentioning its stock ticker and noting he holds its shares. Palantir also sponsored last year's U.S. Army 250th Anniversary Parade.

In 2024, Karp told CNBC that some of his strong political stances, including public support for Israel, had led some employees to leave the company. This followed attacks by the Palestinian armed group Hamas, which resulted in approximately 1,200 casualties.

During Wednesday's interview with Eisen, Karp described himself as a "progressive through and through" who wants better lives for people at the bottom.

Karp also expressed frustration with the politicization of AI, arguing that artificial intelligence technology will influence a series of core, significant political decisions in the United States.

He said, "This cannot be reduced to a red versus blue debate. AI is a massive transformation. It contains opportunities that perhaps only America can seize, but it also carries risks inherent in such a shift."
