A Promising Start to the 15th Five-Year Plan: Qingdao's New Role in Deepening Manufacturing Roots, Nurturing 20 Unicorns

Deep News06:31

Qingdao has successfully cultivated a total of 20 unicorn enterprises, doubling its count over the past eight years, and ranking second in northern China and seventh nationwide. This milestone was highlighted at the 2026 Qingdao Unicorn Enterprise Conference held on September 22, where a new report showcased the city's growing prowess in fostering high-value startups.

According to the "UP Global Unicorn Data Analysis Report (2026)" released at the event, 98 new companies entered the global top 500 unicorn list in 2026, with the artificial intelligence sector emerging as the primary driver of growth. Qingdao's unicorns span diverse industries, including information technology, advanced manufacturing, energy and environmental protection, and aerospace, reflecting a strategic expansion into future-oriented sectors.

Beneath these figures lies a more significant trend: the value of global unicorns is increasingly concentrating among top players, with AI and deep technology becoming pivotal factors in the new competitive landscape. Qingdao, leveraging its robust manufacturing foundation, is cultivating a cluster of "hardcore new species" designed for the future, positioning itself as a key player in this transformation.

The AI Revolution Reshaping the Global Unicorn Landscape

Unicorn enterprises are widely regarded as a vital force and barometer for high-quality regional economic development. The report maps out the innovative dynamics and capital flows of the global unicorn ecosystem, revealing a pronounced acceleration in value concentration at the top end of the market.

In 2026, the global unicorn count reached 1,881, with a total valuation of 60.14 trillion yuan, spread across 14 sectors including fintech, information technology, AI, and advanced manufacturing. The top 500 global unicorns alone account for 46.45 trillion yuan in valuation, representing three-quarters of the total global figure. This marks a remarkable cumulative growth of 242.1% from the 13.58 trillion yuan recorded in 2019, with a year-on-year increase of 7.31 trillion yuan, or 18.68%.

Where does this growth originate? The answer points squarely to artificial intelligence. In 2026, AI companies dominated new additions to the global top 500, with 98 newcomers in the sector. China is a critical force in this trend, hosting 103 AI unicorns, which constitutes 42.04% of the global total, second only to the United States' 111. Leveraging its rich industrial scenarios, Chinese AI unicorns are rapidly accelerating technology deployment across fields such as embodied intelligence and robotics, smart driving, industrial manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and content generation.

As algorithms, hardware products, production processes, and real-world business operations become deeply integrated, the "AI plus industry" model is scaling rapidly, providing robust support for China's AI competitiveness. This shift signals that capital is no longer chasing abstract concepts but is concentrating on AI and deep technologies that can deliver tangible results, scale effectively, and establish formidable industry barriers.

As a major player in the unicorn arena, China hosts 568 such companies, representing 30.20% of the global total and ranking second worldwide. Their combined valuation stands at 16.37 trillion yuan, also second globally. In terms of sector distribution, Chinese unicorns span all 14 tracks, showcasing extensive industrial coverage. Notably, in the hard-tech domains of advanced manufacturing and automotive technology, China leads the world with 171 and 43 unicorns respectively, accounting for over 70% of each sector's global total.

Changxin Technology, which went public on the Science and Technology Innovation Board in July, is a prime example. Valued at 197 billion yuan, it ranks 28th globally and, with a valuation increase of 149 billion yuan, is the fourth-fastest-growing unicorn in China. The essence of Chinese unicorns is shifting from "fast-paced business model execution" to "ascending the heights of hard technology."

Rooted in Qingdao's Intelligent Manufacturing Ecosystem

In the broader global and Chinese unicorn landscape, Qingdao's position is becoming increasingly distinct: 20 unicorn enterprises, doubling in eight years, ranking second in northern China and seventh across the country. An examination of Qingdao's unicorn list reveals a clear industrial logic: these companies are not products of chasing fleeting trends but are "hardcore new species" born from the city's deep manufacturing roots.

The new generation of information technology and AI are prioritized as leading industries in Qingdao, and their convergence point is where unicorns are aggressively positioning themselves. Goertek Microelectronics, for instance, is the world's fifth-largest and China's largest provider of intelligent sensing and interaction solutions. Focusing on consumer electronics, automotive electronics, smart homes, industrial applications, and medical health, it has consistently ranked first globally in acoustic sensor shipments for years. Its one-stop service capability, from materials R&D to chip design, packaging, testing, software algorithms, and system design, makes it an indispensable link in the global consumer electronics supply chain.

Chenxin Technology is venturing into commercial aerospace and the low-altitude economy, holding a leading domestic market share in satellite internet broadband terminal baseband communication chips and modules, and ranking top three in the civilian drone image transmission market. Naizhen Technology, ranking fifth globally and third in China among professional optical module manufacturers, and second in professional optical network terminals, has earned widespread capital market recognition. Its vertical integration of "optical chips plus optical modules" and proprietary core technologies make it a rare asset in the global AI optical interconnection field.

The AI empowerment capability emerging from manufacturing is Qingdao's most distinctive track. COSMOPlat has built an "industrial AI brain," leveraging its high-quality industrial data and digitalization expertise to develop the Tianzhi industrial large model. This model integrates industrial mechanisms from sectors like home appliances, chemicals, automobiles, and machinery, combining massive data, over 200 expert algorithms, and more than 110 intelligent agent development tools. It has already contributed to empowering 20 lighthouse factories globally, serving over 160,000 enterprises.

TELD is rapidly transforming from traditional charging operations into the "AI automatic charging robot" arena. It has pioneered the "Call Island" globally for unmanned driving automatic charging scenarios, creating a fully unmanned operational system that integrates charging robots, vehicle maintenance robots, and AI agents. The "Call Island No. 1" automatic charging and operation system for driverless vehicles, developed by TELD, was officially launched in Qingdao in May this year.

NewLink, which specializes in AI algorithms, IoT, and energy digitalization core technologies, connects its intelligent energy supply-demand matching services to nearly 50% of the nation's vehicle charging stations and over 25,000 gas stations. It has independently developed products like automatic charging robots and the NEF smart energy scheduling system, with its charging and refueling services now pre-installed in the smart cockpits of 80% of domestic mainstream automakers.

These forward-looking arrangements in intelligence and green energy are not sporadic opportunities but strategic positioning for the future.

The Cracking Code Behind the "City of Unicorns"

Unicorns are not "potted plants" artificially ripened by short-term policies; they are the outcome of a synergistic interplay between the industrial ecosystem, leading enterprise spin-offs, tiered cultivation, and capital empowerment. If one were to distill a defining development pattern from this list, it would be that most of Qingdao's unicorns have evolved from the industrial ecosystems of industry leaders.

COSMOPlat, Haier New Energy, Ririshun, and Shaohaihui were all incubated by Haier. Naizhen Technology and Juhuikan originated from Hisense. TELD is a subsidiary of listed company Tgood. Goertek Microelectronics is a key strategic deployment by Goertek. Behind Chenxin Technology is the central state-owned enterprise CICT. The financial resources, application scenarios, and supply chain advantages of these industry leaders provide unicorns with a mature industrial base, significantly accelerating their growth.

On September 22, Naizhen Technology was officially listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, successfully "graduating" as the sixth listed company from the "Hisense Group." It has gained recognition from overseas cornerstone investors and long-term capital, enhancing Qingdao's visibility in the global AI computing power landscape. Haier New Energy, founded just three years ago, entered the unicorn rankings with a valuation exceeding $1 billion. It offers comprehensive smart clean energy solutions covering distributed photovoltaics, wind power, and household and commercial smart microgrids, with its reach extending overseas. In January this year, it completed a 1 billion yuan Series B financing round and officially initiated its IPO guidance process.

The value of an industrial ecosystem lies in its capacity to accommodate diverse growth rhythms. This is supported by Qingdao's comprehensive tiered cultivation system: innovative small and medium-sized enterprises are "selected and seeded," specialized and sophisticated SMEs are "optimized and strengthened," and companies progress through levels from eaglets, gazelles, and hidden unicorns to full unicorns. Currently, Qingdao boasts 256 national-level "little giant" enterprises, 3,118 specialized and sophisticated SMEs, and 5,661 innovative SMEs, all ranking first in Shandong Province. Qingdao has also enrolled 1,678 enterprises in its eaglet enterprise cultivation plan, nurtured 527 provincial-level gazelle enterprises, and identified 72 hidden unicorn enterprises, establishing a complete lifecycle pipeline.

To safeguard enterprise growth, a special working group for private economy development, led by the city's top officials, coordinates resources. The Qingdao Private Economy Development Bureau, in collaboration with multiple departments, has launched a three-year action plan to cultivate gazelle and unicorn enterprises. This plan outlines seven key priorities: precise identification and cultivation, market expansion, diversified financial services, technological innovation leadership, talent recruitment and development, enterprise internal drive enhancement, and international cooperation and exchange. It opens up a full pathway for enterprise growth, integrating policy guidance, industrial support, special rewards, and ecosystem empowerment, creating a virtuous cycle of "discovering, cultivating, and strengthening enterprises."

Qingdao continues to strengthen policy supply, factor aggregation, and service innovation for growing enterprises. The "Qingdao Policy Connect" platform has disbursed 5.874 billion yuan in benefits to enterprises. In the national evaluation of the SME development environment, Qingdao ranks eighth among sub-provincial cities, with its market environment indicator ranking third nationally. In the first half of this year, Qingdao organized seven industrial chain integration and connection events, attracting over 500 enterprises from outside the city to explore cooperation.

By deepening roots in manufacturing, climbing toward hard-tech heights, and expanding into "AI plus" applications, perhaps this is the true strength and vision of Qingdao as a "City of Unicorns."
