Yangzhou Addresses Constant Dripping from Elevated Bridges During Rain to Eliminate Safety Hazards and Improve Driving Comfort

Deep News10-14

At around 7 a.m. on October 14th, workers from Yangzhou Municipal Facilities Department arrived at the entrance of a residential complex at No. 18 Runyang North Road. After setting up warning facilities, they began repairing the elevated bridge drainage pipes that drip during rainy weather. This represents another round of maintenance work on drainage pipes for Runyang Expressway and other expressways, following the completion of special remediation work on the Chengnan Expressway elevated bridge drainage system. The goal is to eliminate the constant dripping from elevated bridges during rain and improve driving comfort.

According to reports, Yangzhou's Chengnan Expressway has been in operation for over seven years since its completion in 2018. Bridge auxiliary facilities such as elevated bridge drainage pipes have gradually shown aging problems, with frequent occurrences of main drainage pipe blockages and leaks, loose connections at pipe joints, and corroded metal clamps falling off. If not addressed promptly, these issues could easily lead to safety accidents involving drainage pipes falling from height. The water drops or even "water curtains" falling from above also cause discomfort for drivers.

In the first half of this year, the Municipal Facilities Department launched a special safety hazard remediation project for drainage pipes on the main line, interchanges, and ramps of Chengnan Expressway. The elevated bridge drainage pipes were classified as high-level risk sources, with targeted preventive measures developed accordingly.

The city has integrated inspection resources for urban expressways and auxiliary road surface drainage, adopting a combined approach of "special inspections + regular inspections + routine surveys" to increase inspection frequency and shorten inspection cycles, ensuring early discovery and warning of hazards. Following the principle of "prioritizing urgent matters, addressing main issues first, then secondary ones, with comprehensive coverage," a months-long remediation effort was conducted targeting drainage pipes that had exceeded or were approaching their service life and posed significant safety hazards. The project completed reinforcement work on 524 drainage pipe locations, effectively eliminating safety hazards such as aging, loosening, and leakage of Chengnan Expressway elevated bridge drainage pipes and components.

Building on this foundation, the department has also initiated hazard inspection and remediation work for drainage pipes on Jinwan Expressway and elevated bridges of expressways including Jinwan, Jiangguang, Yunhe, Jiangping, and Runyang, to effectively ensure safe operation of municipal facilities and safe travel for citizens.
